We've covered just about all the "guy" changes that happen during puberty, from growth spurts to good hygiene. If you are still unsure about the different twists and turns during puberty, read on for the answers to some questions guys often ask. If you still need answers, talk to a parent, educator, or other trusted adult.
  • My body seems to be growing at different rates. Is that normal?
  • A boy's body goes through puberty at its own pace. Not all changes are going to happen at the same time or at the same rate. But before you know it, all your parts will have caught up with each other!
  • Is it normal for testicles to shrink down in size after swimming?
  • Yes. This is a normal reaction. When a boy's testicles get cold, they sometimes retract into the body, seeking warmer temperatures. This is only temporary.
  • Is it common for a boy's testicles and penis to ache?
  • Yes. These organs are constantly growing and changing and this can create aches. Erections that last a long time, may hurt. Or, an erection without ejaculation leads to the buildup of semen in the testicles that may cause slight pain. It is only temporary and not harmful.
  • One testicle is larger than the other and hangs slightly lower. Should I be concerned?
  • No. This is normal during puberty as both testicles grow larger. The left testicle generally hangs lower than the right testicle.
  • Some girls in my class are taller than I am. Could I be done growing?
  • Most likely you are not through growing, especially if you have just noticed the first signs of puberty. During puberty, boys and girls go through many growth spurts. In general, girls grow taller at first and then boys follow. Don't worry if you are not growing as quickly as your buddies or girls in your class. Each person is different and grows at his/her own rate.
  • What causes puberty to happen in boys?
  • A hormone called testosterone sends a signal to a boy's body that it's time for puberty to begin.
  • What does testosterone do?
  • Testosterone spurs the development of the mature male body. The penis and testicles grow, and testicles begin to produce sperm (male sex cells). Hair appears on the chest, legs, face, underarms, and pubic area. They trigger sweat glands and an all-around growth spurt, too.
  • What is sperm?
  • A sperm is a tiny cell. It contains half the genetic material that is needed to make a human being. A sperm cell is needed to fertilize a woman's egg to make a baby.
  • Can boys experience emotional changes during puberty?
  • Yes. Boys and girls experience similar emotional changes during adolescence. Their feelings about themselves and the people around them might change. They might begin to feel more sensitive or temperamental. Boys and girls are often self-conscious about their changing bodies. Boys also experience mood swings during puberty. Like girls, boys need to learn how to control those mood swings.
