Do you sometimes get into a bad mood for no reason? For a good reason? How does your mood affect how you treat other people?

Scene 1. Your little brother has been asking you to go with him to the store. He's been asking you every five minutes for the whole day. You don't feel well and would really rather not go anywhere. What do you do?

  1. Take him and make the best of it. It's a nice day out anyway.
  2. Take him and complain the whole time.
  3. Keep ignoring him and hope he goes away.

Scene 2. Today at school, your best friend had some serious attitude. She was acting like she was doing you a favor by even talking to you. You ended the day by telling her to get off her high horse. Now you feel bad. You two have been best friends for years, but lately you seem to be arguing more often. What do you do?

  1. Call your friend and apologize for snapping at her. Tell her that you sense something is wrong and then offer to help, even if it's just listening to her.
  2. Call your friend and tell her you did not appreciate her attitude and suggest she snap out of it.
  3. Don't call. Sit home and think about the nerve of her to give you such attitude.

Scene 3. It's Saturday. Your mom wants you to help around the house. But you want to go to the mall and hang with your friends. You snapped at your mom in anger and she sent you to your room. What do you do now?

  1. Tell your mom you're sorry.
  2. Stay in your room all day.
  3. Sneak out of the house.

Check your answers. Did you get:

All A's: PMS? Not you! You're sailing through your days with hardly a care. You're handling whatever issues come your way with grace and ease. Good for you!

All B's, or any combination of A, B, and C's: Yup, that settles it: You're completely normal. Sometimes you're up, sometimes you're down, sometimes you're in between, and your mood can change any time. That's the emotional roller coaster of puberty…nothing to lose sleep about. Just try to control mood swings as best you can, because they can also affect your family and friends.

All C's: Oh, girl, sounds like the emotional trials and tribulations of puberty are wearing you down. But take heart: what you're going through is normal. Puberty happens to everyone. Sometimes it's not easy, either. Try to remember to control your outbursts. And smile…sounds crazy, but if you act happy, you're more likely to be happy.

During puberty, your emotions may feel out of control. One minute you're happy, the next you're grouchy, the next you're crying - all for no apparent reason. You might bawl your eyes out one day, and the next day you can't remember why you were upset. You might feel good about your growing body one day, and the next day, you may feel awkward and angry about those very same changes. You might also notice that your friendships are changing. You might even find yourself more interested in boys. Or - you might be totally grossed out by them. Or a little of both.

Mixed-up feelings are normal. Besides outside changes, you're changing on the inside. Glands that produce your hormones are in overdrive. Right before your period, hormones peak, and that can send your emotions on a roller-coaster ride. Knowing what to expect will help you get a grip on your emotions.
