Let's face it, childbirth wasn't a completely painless exercise. Consider your perineum - the area between your vagina and the anus. For years, you weren't even aware that you had one. Now it hurts. Stretching has made it swollen and sore. And if your doctor performed an episiotomy (an incision into the perineum at the rear of the vaginal opening to aid the birthing process) you'll have stitches. This may make sitting, urinating or having bowel movements uncomfortable. It will heal naturally, but to help relieve the pain and promote healing, apply ice packs to the area during the first 24 hours. After that, take warm baths. Discuss this and other possible treatments with your health care provider.
