Workouts That Don’t Feel Like Exercise

When it comes to working out, getting motivated is usually the toughest part. Staying fit is hard work, and sometimes you just don’t feel like putting in the energy. Try a few of these calorie burners to break up your regular routine. They’ll get you up and moving, but because they’re fun and can be done with others, they don’t seem so bad.

  • Gardening: All that bending and kneeling and tearing out weeds can really work up a sweat. In fact, just a half hour of gardening could burn more calories than walking for half an hour. Don’t have a garden? Plant one! Gardening is a very rewarding hobby – you get to see your hard work pay off right before your eyes. Not only will starting it up be a great workout, but maintaining it will be, too. Starting a vegetable garden will help keep you active and eating healthy at the same time.
  • Dancing: Whether you’re out on the town, at a party or in your bedroom, dancing is one of the most fun ways to stay fit. Tap, line, ballroom, freestyle, whatever – it doesn’t matter if you’re a “good dancer” or not – just moving to the music for 15 minutes burns about 100 calories.
  • Shopping: Walking from store to store, carrying all those bags, trying on outfit after outfit … it’s no wonder shopping is a great workout. It’s even better with a friend or two. Just be sure to steer clear of the choices at the food court that could undo all your “hard work.” Eat before you go, or stick to fresh deli sandwiches and salads.
  • Camping: Between pitching the tent, gathering firewood and hiking to the bathrooms, you’re getting a workout in and you don’t even know it. Make a weekend out of camping, rafting and hiking, and you’ll really work up a sweat. Bring along a group of friends, and you’ll pay more attention to the great time you’re having than all the hard work you’re doing.
  • Video Games: We know, this sounds counterintuitive. But today’s video game systems get you up on your feet and depend on your actions to move the game along. You can bowl, play tennis, practice yoga, snowboard and more, all in the comfort of your living room. Some games will even tell you how long you’ve been playing and calculate the number of calories you’ve burned.

Staying fit doesn’t have to be hard work. By giving something new a try and sprinkling in a little fun, you can be on your way to better health without ever knowing it.
