Good friends are something to treasure. Each one provides you with a different type of joy and makes you a better person. Below are five types of female friends that will bring out your very best. Some really incredible women fall into multiple categories. But even if you have just one of these ladies in your life, you can consider yourself lucky.

The Travel Companion
This friend loves trying new things, experiencing new cultures and taking time to relax. She's flexible – if something on your trip doesn't turn out quite as planned, she's A-O.K. with resorting to Plan B. And she's comfortable enough with you to enjoy long, personal talks, some quiet time, even a bit of mischief.

The Workout Buddy
She's a great motivator – you know she'll meet you at the gym as promised, so you'd better be there, too. She knows just what to say to push you a little harder and a little farther. And she's not afraid of a little sweat or spandex.

The Unconditional Supporter
This woman is positive and uplifting through the good times and the bad. She'd be the first to tell you that going back to school is a fabulous idea. And she's the one you turn to when you need consoling, because she helps you realize that everything is going to be all right.

The Goofy Gal
This girl just wants to have fun, and does she ever. She finds humor and adventure in even the littlest things. And her laughter and zest for life are infectious. For a guaranteed good time, give her a call.

The Straight Shooter
This woman tells it like it is without the sugar coating, but it's always out of love. Even if she sometimes seems brutally honest, she sincerely wants the best for you. If ever you need a straightforward answer, this is the woman you need to see.

It's been said that friends are the family we choose for ourselves. By surrounding yourself with such dynamic women, you're bound to discover and nurture your very best qualities.

well this article fits me to a T I am that woman just ask any of my friends. I love to help people, listen, console, I am that funny person who can make you laugh at just about anything. I am that straight forward person who will tell you like it is no sugar coating anything. I will tell you how it is straight forward. I think people need people like us to make the day better and brighter. I know when I am not at work my friends say they miss me and the night isn't the same without me there. They say it gives them something to look forward to when comming to work makes work better not the same ol same ol

So true!!!! Our needs change on a daily basis--having a circle of friends that can be there for you no matter how you're feeling can be the difference between living life to the fullest and barely getting by.

I've been truely blessed, to have, as I tell everyone, the best friends in the world. Over the past 30 years, I've changed residents several times, I changed my style of living, I've even changed husbands. BUT I still have the same loving, loyal, good friends. They have been there through sickness, death, divorce, several children, life's good time and lifes bad. In the bible book of Proverbs 18:24 it said that a "friend would stick closer than a brother" this is so true.I have spoken to my sisters or brothers in years, but my friends and I always keep in touch. I had nothing to do with choosing my family. BUT I did an excellent job on choosing my friends. I know in a flash with out me even asking they would give up their life for me, and I too for them. Because friends are always there for each other. By the way I really enjoyed your article on 5 friends a woman needs. it was very true.

Great article! I enjoy friends who are upbeat. And I think it's hard to find friends in all the categories listed.It would be great but not that easily attainable.

I loved this article. It is so true! I recently turned 24 and I don't have any friends in my life who I can depend on. Hopefully, one day, I can be able to experience a friendship w/ someone who fits into one of these categories.

Oh, it makes me sad when some of you say you don't really have friends. I guess we can always meet new people and try to become friends.
I do have friends, but I don't really consider them always being there for me. I have one since high school, but we see eachother barely. We live far away from eachother. But, now I just started to see my friend since she had to bring her cat over to another friend's to take care of, so that is prob why I am seeing her again.
I guess I am starting to understand more of the meaning of "friendship", one word never take em' for granted otherwise you will end up alone! That is one big lesson I hope I learned!

Dee to have a friend you must be a friend. I have two friends who fit this description. I feel very blessed. I am in my 50's so there have been times when I didn't feel this way. But as I attend church, go to work, to buy groceries or whatever I do I have always tried to be a friendly helpful person. Not just for others but for myself. My family has always been supportive of whatever I maybe doing which always helped. Just remember God is always there to be your friend when you dont feel like anyone else is.

I have a wonderful sister who that has become my friend over the years. Some of the time we argue and some of the time we fight but, I couldn' ct have asked for a better sister in the whole wide world. I consider myself BLESSED!!!!!!! Oh yeah and I have a great mom also.

Hey! Can you help me with this? It's so complicated..i don't know what to do now...I have to choose between friends and my boy friends I don't know what i should do now! I don't know if i love him??? And my friends won't talking to me if i continue dating with him..

Getting out into the community is the way to get friends. Karen R is right. Plus it depends where you are in life. The 20's are the toughest years. If you can survive those, you'll be fine. I try really hard to keep old friends but I see us drift away sometimes because of our changing lives. I also pick up new friends through new activities in the community. Some of the women in my family have also become good friends. I'm in my early 40's and Christine, you will find that your girlfriends will most of the time outlast your boyfriends. Plus, a good boyfriend or husband will let you have your friends just like he wants to spend time with his friends, too. If he wants you exclusively all the time and tries to isolate you from others - that's not the man you want. There will be times in your life where you may not have much time for your girl friends - ie, young children, newlywed, full time work - but it is worth it to keep in touch and find balance.
