Dealing with Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the gradual period of change leading into menopause. The ovaries’ production of estrogen slows down, making hormones fluctuate and causing physical changes like irregular and inconsistent periods, hot flashes, and heightened emotions. But knowing what to expect is half the battle. Here are a few things you can do to make getting through this phase of your life a little easier.

Be Prepared

During perimenopause, your period may be shorter or longer, and heavier or lighter, than it was in the past. You may even skip a period altogether. Prepare yourself by having a few pads or tampons on hand at all times. Keeping some in your purse, in your car and at work would be a great idea.

Keep a Calendar

By recording the length and flow of your menstrual cycle, as well as your signs and symptoms, for several months, you'll gain a better understanding of the changes occurring during this time. You’ll also have valuable information to discuss with your doctor.

See Your Doctor

Because we're always learning more about treatment options and hormone therapy, it can be confusing to figure out how to best manage your perimenopausal symptoms. It is important to have a doctor you trust, so you can talk openly about your concerns and treatment options.

Talk about your symptoms and whether they bother you. Bring along the calendar you’ve been keeping. Using this information, you and your doctor can work together to make your time of change a little easier on you.

Make Small Changes

Making a few tweaks to your daily routine may help alleviate your symptoms and keep you healthier in the long run.

  • Good Nutrition

Because your risk of osteoporosis and heart disease increases during perimenopause, a healthy diet is more important than ever. Adopt a low-fat, high-fiber diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Add calcium-rich foods or take a calcium supplement. Avoid alcohol or caffeine, which can trigger hot flashes. If you smoke, try to quit.
  • Regular Exercise

Regular physical activity helps keep your weight down, improves your sleep, strengthens your bones, and elevates your mood. Try to exercise for 30 minutes or more on most days of the week.
  • Stress Reduction

Practiced regularly, stress reduction techniques such as meditation or yoga can help you relax and tolerate your symptoms more easily.

Keep Cool

Some women find hot flashes to be the hardest part of perimenopause. They happen at random, sometimes in very public places and at the very worst times. But there are things you can do to lessen their frequency and severity.

  • Avoid Triggers

If you’re keeping a calendar, you may start to notice that your hot flashes always occur when you drink alcohol or eat spicy foods. Knowing what these triggers are and avoiding them may help reduce the number of hot flashes you experience.
  • Sleep in a Cool Room

Night sweats are hot flashes that occur while you sleep. To avoid them, try using a fan. Or use sheets and pajamas that let your skin breathe. If you’re napping during the day, close the blinds to keep out the sun’s heat. And keep a cold, refreshing drink on the nightstand, just in case.
  • Dress in Layers

When a hot flash hits, being able to remove a jacket or a T-shirt can help immensely.

Once you’re past menopause, the frequency of hot flashes should diminish, and they usually disappear within a few years.

What about postmenopause?
Are there things We should watch for after menopause?
Do we still get Hot and Cold flashes?
Do we get headaches? You know things like that.
Can we still have mood changes?

Thank You,
Gail

I have been on a continual routine of birth control pills for years now to help control my symptoms (migraine, vomitting)...I am 43 and my body feels hot all the time, especially my feet and it is very uncomfortable...I also have found that my underwear is being drenched with sweat and its a gross feeling...is there something I can do about/for that? it is driving me crazy...help!!!

I think I'm going through menopause, because my periods are sometimes long or short and sometimes I will skip a month or two. And I use to get real bad hot flashes all the tiime, now they are slowing going away. I work in a factory and it is always hot there, so I can't really get over my hot flash. I will get a piece of cardboard and fan myself until the sweat goes. But I love your information and products. I definitely like the new silk tampons. Great Idea. Now I know I can definitely depend on Kotex for all my femine products to use. Thanks again.

I am 37 and no physician belives that I have hot flashes and sever moods. I have two periods a month sometimes, but if I have only one it's extremely heavy, the months where I have two, they are lighter and the cramps are not as dibiitating as the months with only one. This is effecting my job and my family. I have been to 3 Gyno. and they don't take me at my work. Tell me I am too young. Is there anyone that feels this way.

thanks

Mary,

MARY, YOU ARE PROBABLY GOING THROUGH MENOPAUSE. I HAD HEAVY PERIODS, MOOD SWINGS, HOT FLASHES. THE HEAVY PERIODS WERE AFFECTING MY EVERYDAY LIFE SO I HAD A COMPLETE HISTERECTOMY 6 WEEKS AGO. I AM NOW ON HOMONES AND I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO BE PERSISTANT WITH DOCTORS. (BECAUSE OF YOUR AGE THEY MAY SUGGEST NOT REMOVING YOUR OVARIES ) GOOD LUCK!

I am 50 yrs old.. my most recent period is lasting now for about 14 days... Is this normal??

Sirena, 7/10/2008 7:44:00 AM
I am 36 and have been experiencing perimenopause symptoms for a few years now. My mom and sister went thru the same thing. I have terrible hot flashes and mood swings. My periods are shorter and cramps are rare now. I thought most of my stress issues were from my mother's cancer/alzheimer's diagnoses 2 years ago. I started on antidepressants for the stress. I find them to be extremely helpful for day to day stress and now the mood swings from menopause. I highly reccommend them. You don't have to be depressed and never be ashamed to take them. My family has always said anyone who needs them is just "crazy". I don't feel that way and I am so grateful for them.

Hi,
I am glad that it's not just me. I have been feeling awful, the last few months, with periods as and when, sometimes within two weeks, sometimes not for 3 months, hot flushes, palpitations, which really scare me. I have just done a FHS test, which showed as positive, I think this means low levels of estrogen, or something like that, which probably explains a lot of things I am going through. I really get depressed becaue I feel frightened of the palpitations, which are really horrible. I am trying Menopace, which has really helped for the past few days. MY hairs getting thinner, I am tired all the time, and don't feel excited about anything. I think I will have to see the GP, but they aren't really much use, they will probably suggest HRT. I don't want that, but think it might be better than suffering. I am only 39 and don't want this for the next 10 years. HELP!!!

I am 46 years old and kept a calender for 5 years. the last 2/3 years my period was an average of 19 days apart. sometimes skipping a month and sometimes 2 in a month. june of 07 i had one and then in novmber and my last one in january of 08. Its confusing because my blood tests say I am not menopausal however my mother was done when she was 40 years old.

Dee, 7/31/2008 10:41:02 AM
Im 47 and have been meopausal now for 5 yrs.and ready to pull my hair out.
I have the hot flashes...night sweats, and the dryness, The most difficult for me is the emotions. I have never in my life felt so out of control with my emotions. What can be done about the emotions with out HRT..HELP LADIES HELP

Simone, 8/1/2008 9:32:16 AM
At 40 I had an operation and after that I had no period for 4 months. It was probably the hardest time in my life. The gynecologist suggested early meanopause, the hormone test proved it. I saw an ayurvedic doctor who was very understanding and she calmed me down and gave me medicine which helped reduce the hot flushes, sweats, palpitations, Then periods returned and appeard normal for 4 months and then hot flushes returned. I'm taking the same medicine again and it helps physically, However, emotionally I'm totally out of ballance. My partner doesn't understand and it causes me a great deal of stress. I feel insecure and paranoid, I'm thinking really dark stuff. Now I'm totally alone in a town where I don't know many people and those that I know are for some reason unavailable. Bloody typical. They love you when you're happy and avoid you when you're down. I'm going on a bicycle ride now and I'm sure I'll feel better. Like I felt better a few days ago when I painted and redecorated the flat. Keep it up girls!!!

Kelly, 8/1/2008 10:31:57 AM
I just recently turned 40 and for the past year I have been skipping periods. All last year I had one every 3 months and they were fine. I just finished one after six months of not having one. I thought I was too young to go through menopause and was still hoping for children after 3 losses but I guess I wasn't meant to have my own. I didn't associate being overly warm and tired with menopause but now I am starting to think I am entering that phase of life.

Mary, 8/5/2008 11:08:31 AM
I am 48 years old and have had a continuous period lasting for 4 weeks today! I have night sweats and occasional dizziness. Premenopausal?!?!?!

Leah, 8/17/2008 7:34:10 PM
Everyone is surprised when I tell them I'm nearly 56. Most people, including health professionals think I'm in my late 30's. After watching my mother and much older sister admitted into psychiatric hospitals during their menopauses, at the first signs, I begged for HRT and apart for sweats, I think I had it very lucky.

However, last week I had sex for the first time in about 3.5 years, since I ended the change. I half expected vaginal dryness, but I didn't expect my ex-partner (that's who it was) to point out my clitoris has virtually shrank to nothing!! I checked, and he's right.

What the hell do I do about this? Where do I go to get this taken seriously, my gynecologist and Gps are male. You know, the young jokey types.

I'm horrified and really scared. I feel as if I've been neutered.

Tina, 8/20/2008 4:33:49 PM
I just read everyone's posted comments. I am sorry everyone else has similar issues, however, relieved that I am not having interplanetary, outer body experiences alone!
This is the first time I've had my period for one month straight and it's been HEAVY....clotting and disgusting. I was lucky enough to skip a few months since November'07, but am making up for it right now at 52, as my mother did.
I also sing in a band and when I have to hit a high note.....look out everyone, you might get hit with a clot!
I'm really just going to keep making jokes about perimenopause and then when I'm lucky enough to get to the final stages of menopause, I will have to stop my investment in the feminine product industry (or maybe not...it's probably the only profitable, undying investment!).
I will continue to read your comments and join in with my experiences....gotta go, just squirted....hope nobody notices!
Thanks Kotex, for your wonderful products....I'm your best customer recently!

sandra, 8/25/2008 2:47:17 PM

Dominique, 8/26/2008 3:29:05 PM
I am a 37 year old African American female. I think I got my period when I was about 10. My periods have never really been regular. But about the last 3 years, I have noticed a change. I have been very moody to the point of being a screaming banshee, have crying jags, have heightened sexual feelings.I keep a calendar and all these behaviors happen at least two weeks before my period is due. Now I have noticed my hair is thinning at the top and I seem to sweat more especially under the arms.
Are these signs of perimenopause or a hormonal imbalance. I also been diagnosed with PCOS.

La'Tice, 8/30/2008 7:28:16 AM
i am 38 and im experiencing heavy bleeding with hugh blood clots....i go through 2 pads in an hour....in the past i could not sleep with the fan on...no it is the law in bedroom.....my period last 7-10 days....i am hot all the time....i can't go no where when im on my period is this going though perimenopause, somebody please tell me....my doctor suggested to have this surgery to slow down or completely stop my period...but i am afraid to have this done because i feel it is not normal (plus my husband says NO!).....will the pill help!!!!

Hi, I have just read this in the hope of finding some comfort. I'm 47, and have been having mood swings for a good couple of years, I also suffer from bouts of chronic insomnia. I am finding life almost unbearable but plod on for my children. I have no enjoyment and am not able to derive any pleasure from anything, I also miss my ex boyfriend who conveniently finished with me in Jan this year when a blood test confirmed the peri-menopause. I don't know whether to start anti-depressants or not... surely they will just mask over the problem ? but, I have no energy or motivation to persist with exercise, distraction etc. Anyone else feel the same ? and have you got any ideas ?

Valerie, 9/7/2008 7:11:15 PM
I have had periods lasting 5-6 weeks (it has happened 3-4 times over the last 1-2 years). Sometimes it is so heavy I am afraid to go in public and especially to stand up after sitting for awhile (kind of like a dam breaking open at times). Other times it pretends it is about to quit and I get all excited only to have it rev up again! Is it time to see a doctor? Should I be afraid or is this normal perimenopause?

Angela, 9/22/2008 12:11:41 AM
I'm 47 yrs. old, during the past four years, my periods has been a little irreguler, about once or twice in a year, I skip cycles for two months, then I'm reguler for the longest time. When I got my period two weeks ago, it was very heavy for four days, then it lightend up after the fifth day, thinking it was ending. Well, I'm still having my period, this is two weeks now. It stops for a day, thinking it's ending, but it comes right back after about twelve hours. All and all, for the past week, when it does come back, it's very light. Another words, the bottom line, is that it hasen't stop completely, this is two weeks now. Is it likely I started my perimenopause?

hillmom, 9/24/2008 4:13:51 PM
Wow. Ain't it great to be a mature woman!!
Just read all your comments to date and marvel that we are all alike in this sisterhood of perimenopause, menopause itself and postmenopause. Our symptoms are the same-infrequent cycles or heavy periods-thank you Kotex for your dependable feminine products. I keep pads of all sizes on hand for the unexpected at home, in the car and in my luggage for travel. The mood swings I and my family can do without. I noticed, however, if I avoid caffeine and sweets, I "act" and feel better. Those of you having long, heavy cycles should see your doctor to make sure it's nothing serious. Be kind to yourselves! Just knowing the hot flashes will be over eventually keeps me sane.

donna, 10/3/2008 12:42:17 PM
I am turning 45 this weekend, So I guess what I am going through is not so unusual. I have always had my period like clock work until until four month ago, then it was extremely light then non existent for two months. When it showed back up it was light spotting then a regular cycle and light spotting ever since, going on now for 33 days. My mother has passed away so I have no one to talk to except my husband who , bless his heart ,is wonderful but this is above his head. I quess I need to hear that this is not so unusual that other women are going through the same thing.

Staci, 10/13/2008 1:29:46 PM
! I am 34 and started perimenopause about three years ago. It started with simple night sweats for about a year and than WHAMMO! Hot flashes. In the beginning, they were nasty, dehibilitating, experiences. I didn't make much mention of it when I went to the dr. for another reason, just for her to note that I was experiencing them. The mood swings are recently arrived. Things get thrown - kids get screamed at instead of standard discipline. My children are aware of what is going on. Two of them are girls, so they are a little more understanding than the boy. And the fiance has just learned to hold still and watch. lol. You have to laugh to keep from shooting yourself or others sometimes! I started taking herbal supplements about a year ago and they have kept many symptoms at bay. A few hot flashes sneak in here and there, but nothing as I was experiencing. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one. Many women that I speak to, their first response is the typical "how old are you"? or "Your not old enough". etc. Would love to talk to others who are experiencing this. Shoulders to lean on.

Linda, 10/18/2008 12:18:34 PM
I had a complete hysterectomy in 1998 and still occasionally have hot flashes, although they are not as frequent as they once were. I had severely heavy periods that lasted 12-14 days, then would go away for a week then return. Found out I had fibroid tumors. So, surgery was in order. Since we had a family history of ovarian cancer, I had it all removed. Took a while to adjust to doing without the ovarian input and took supplements for a few months until my doctors took me off them, but am glad now. Only problem now is I have poor bladder control. Oh well, it has to be something, so I still wear protection.

Gailee, 10/20/2008 8:08:38 PM
So glad I found this site.I am expericeing some hot lashes, night sweats before my period starts.I am so moddy and snapping at my family.I don't feel happy or am I ever in a good mood.(I am also on an meds for anxitey. My husband doesn't belive in menopause, and fights me all the time, because I am not ever in the "mood".He says its just an excuse.
I can't stand it.And here I am probably just starting, whats going to happen to me when it really kicks in?

kaya, 10/24/2008 7:45:48 PM
wow , im so glad i found this web site. im forty years old and going through the dredded hot flashes and nite sweats.at first i thought ,im to young for this.reading some of the coments i guess it could creep up on you at any age.so for now i guess we all have to deal with it,and read as much as we can on it.im glad to know im not the only one.

I feel the same way, I also tend to overly worry. I spoke to a counselor and she says not only am I suffering from perimenonpause but depression as well. She suggested that I ask my doctor about antidpressants but I'm not sure about it. Aren't antipressants addictive?

Topaz, 10/25/2008 4:39:15 PM
I'm about to turn 44, and although I have the libido of a 19 year old male (read: cat in perpetual heat), my periods that were like clockwork for the past 8 years are now coming later and later (35-38 day cycles). My fiance comments that my body is always burning up in bed, but I don't feel it, nor do I have hot flashes. For the 1st time in my life I now know what cramps are. I normally have an annoyingly sunny disposition, now I see everything as gray and dull. HELP!

Karen, 10/29/2008 2:08:21 PM
Re: Linda 10/18./08 I was just wondering since you have your ovaries removed, what kind of supplements were you on and what do you take now. I, too have a risk of ovarian and breast cancer and I take estrogen. I would like to get off of them altogether. Can you make a suggestion?

cherie san diego calif, 11/9/2008 4:57:47 PM
My dear friends,
Thank goodness that here we are not alone. I just turned 45 two wks. ago. Kaisers done all the bloodwork, and it comes back that my hormones are that of a 20 something yr.old.Tell that to my kids! My moods vary hour by hour. I had a partial hysterectomy at 33 yrs. of age due to heavy bleeding after giving birth to my last child at 30, they tried the Pill to control, but was unsuccessful... DRS. Refused to take ovaries. Now I have hot flashes and ups&downs. To complicate things more, I've had 3 strokes due to migraine...My husband filed for divorce 2 weeks after the 1st stroke. I lost everything! We had to sell the house, moved into a mobile home w/the kids. and am unable to work- 100% disabled. They say exercise helps, and thank God I can at least walk and recovered w/out any visible signs of weakness. But, that doesn't change the fact that I can't do very many exercises, areobobics, etc. So now what? Something we all have to remember is, we are not alone. We have eachother, sisters in this together in a way. Drs., mostly male, dont understand and/or believe us, but we know how are bodies are behaving & how we feel. So, girls, dont give up! Our great-great-greats had to go through this completely blind. Thank goodness we have sites like this one, that we can talk to eachother and help eachother through the hard spots in our lives. We CAN do this! We have too...

angela, 11/12/2008 3:18:10 PM
I am 34 with four kids under 11 I have had irregular periods since b4 the birth of my 18 month old. My periods are getting further and further apart. I am suffering fiercly with hot flushes, low libido, terrible mood swings and cry all the time. I feel cramps as if my period is on the way but it never seems 2 arrive. I feel sick at times as well? do you think i could be peri? my gran. mum and aunt all had early menopauses.

Patricia, 11/12/2008 5:27:23 PM
When I was about a month from my 50th birthday, I was then dealing with hot flashes and did not know what was going on. I have always had freezing hands, feet, and always wore isotone gloves all day. EVERYDAY! Going through this body-change my hands and feet are warm and I do not have to wear gloves inside. My Mother and I hoped my hands and feet would warm up!

Michele, 11/29/2008 5:21:50 PM
I am 45 years old and have been going through perimenopause for the past few years. Have to say I was never totally prepared for what I feel is the biggest change of life thus far. Night sweats, sometimes many sometimes none, periods that can range from 35 days to 19 days and mood swings of the worst variety, one minute I am euphoric the next a raging lunatic! It simply feels good to share this with other women and know we are not alone. Unfortunately, I can't help but wonder if this change of life brought about my decision to leave my husband of 16 years to have an affair with a man who does not really want a commitment, just casual sex. What on earth am I doing, I really must get myself together. Thanks to all of you who have posted here, your comments have helped put things in perspective.

Diane, 12/7/2008 9:05:13 AM
I've been in perimenopause for almost 2 years now. Hot flashes, mood swings (anger, tears at the oddest times) periods radically different every month...sometimes heavy and painful, sometimes lighter, sometimes 2 a month...I've tried a few birth control pills but they've made me nauseous , gave me diarrhea and terrible gas! Now I'm just living with it. Also to the ladies who have been having periods that last more than 7 days...My ob/gyn said you should be checked if you have a period that lasts more than that especially with heavy bleeding. There could be a serious problem. Just want everyone to stay healthy. For my double periods she checked for fibroids and everything... Oh, by the way, I'm 43. You know, nothing has ever been easy about my period from the day I started at 15 to now...I'm actually kind of looking forward to being done..it may take till I'm 55 or later but I'll get there one way or the other.

cj, 12/9/2008 10:18:20 PM
I'm 33. My mom was 36 when she went thru menopause. My husband had a vasectomy 1 yr ago & has been check to confirm that it did work, so I know pregnancy is not a possibility. For the past 9 months or so I have had a period every other month. On the even months sometimes 2 of them, but at least 1 every 2 months lasts between 12-16 days. I never know when it's coming. Sometimes so light I barely need a pad, sometimes I go thru 4 or 5 a day. Now I have gone almost 3 months with no period. I have had night sweats , which I chalked up to my cold, but now I'm starting to wonder. I also have vaginal dryness. Am I in perimenopause? My doctor just laughs & says I'm way too young, but given my family history...AM I?

lyssibee, 12/11/2008 1:08:08 AM
CJ, we are kind of in the same boat! I am also 33 and have been having hot flashes, no period for 4 months, husband had vasectomy 2 years ago. I went to my OB/GYN and he was great at explaining what was happening with my body. They did some blood work to rule out pregnancy and thyroid problems. I am still waiting for one test for prolactin levels. My dr. said it is not extremely common, but some women go into premature menopause. To control the imbalances, he put me on the lowest dose of birth control pills. I can also cutback on coffee, eat more nutritious meals and exercise (walking, pilates, yoga). You may want to find a female doctor or another dr who will take you seriously. Just hearing my dr explain things and let me know that premature menopause can happen, was more helpful than anything else. I would get a second opinion.

Di, 12/11/2008 5:27:12 AM
It's a never ending thing for me. I feel your pain, ladies. I always has very regular periods. Had my son at 32 then about a year later, wacky symptoms started--the very bad monthly headaches that can go off the charts, the light period followed by a few soakers....I'm now 42 and the gynos and procedures are useless--I am not ready for 'any big one' because it's just not my style to have an operation. I was on herbs that really helped but being unemployed I can't spring for the $ every month. I feel like my period problems feed my being depressed and visa versa.
I can't even celebrate a light month because I know the next will be slamming.
I feel like any $ I have goes to 'period products.' How many more years of this? PS I think giving women over 35 birth control pills (I can't tolerate them) is stupid and if men had periods they would sort this out.

Kim, 12/11/2008 7:34:39 AM
I have been going thru perimenopause for about 3 years now and I will be 45. I have always been regular and started about three years ago with the irregular periods which I hated. I read Suzanne Somers book on BioIdentical Hormones which are natural hormones that are made by a pharmacist and are not synthetic which most common hormone replacement programs are. So I found a dr. in town that specializes in these types of programs. With this program and a very lose dose of occasional prozac - I feel wonderful, my periods are regular and my dark/sad moods are for the most part gone. Ladies, I highly recommend the natural hormones.

I'm so glad I found this web site. I thought I was the only one going through this. I ask everyone my age or older and they say they don't remember feeling any different. I haven't had my period in 65 days and I was so happy. Then it started 4 days ago. I bleed just when I get up and I put a pad on but then there is hardly nothing. Today it seems like it will get worse though. The past year my periods have been so heavy I have had to buy bladder control pads because the other ones don't hold enough. I am very moody and sad. No interest in sex and am extremely hot all the time. Sometimes I feel light headed. Also, I seem to be gaining alot of weight around my middle. I don't think I read this from anyone. I am going to be 48 this month. I started my period just before I turned 11 so I am hoping the end it near!

Thank-you so much for this site. I didn't have any females to talk to about their perimenopausal symptoms. I've been reading books from the library, but they seem to all say that symptoms vary, however, they only mention night sweats, hot flashes and period changes. What help is that? Thank all of you for sharing. Just FYI some of you may also be having low thyroid function at this time as well. The endoctrine system is all connected so keep you dr in the loop. I told my partner that I should write abook about perimenopause, but I was afraid they would put it in the Fiction section. Ha! Wish that you all lived nearby, a support group would be nice. Keep writing!

Kelli, 12/12/2008 10:06:00 PM
I am 44 years old. I guess I was around 39 when I started having perimenopausal symptoms. I have found that progesterone cream really helps in regard to night sweats. You can get it over the counter. I get it from drugstore.com. Also, I started getting headaches about the 3rd day of my period that did not respond to any of the usual over-the-counter painkillers. I found that also taking feverfew (an herb) helps a lot. It doesn't always take the headache completely away, but at least I am functional. You (anyone reading this) might find the book "Before the Change" useful. You can get a used one at half.com for 75 cents (plus shipping).

(I haven't read closely every single posting here, so forgive me if I repeat something that was already stated.)

Lynn, 12/16/2008 3:57:22 AM
I read everyones' posts and I sit here thinking "My word, there has to be a better way" to get through this time in our lives. I heard a few years ago that women in Japan hardly deal with all the symptoms we do in the US. I'm thinking maybe I should look into researching how they deal with menopause over there. I'm on the verge of being 37 and my periods have changed in the last year. Every other month I have heavy periods. There are procedures out there that can be done to help with heavy bleeding and it's not just a hysterectomy either. It's called endometrial ablation. It may or may not work for everyone. It's something to look into.

Isabella, 12/17/2008 10:01:41 AM
So glad I found this site, its great to hear from others, although I am sorry that some of you are suffering so much.

My experiences are irregular periods, some heavy, some light. Bloating, needing to pee constantly, weight gain around the middle, aching legs, hips and knees, itching, sore nipples, sore underarms at times, dizziness, feeling sick, night sweats, no sex drive, depression..... the whole gamut really.

Today I am feeling very weak and dizzy and my legs ache like crazy.

I have no desire to even be with my partner of three years, he doesn't understand my lack of sex drive and puts pressure on me emotionally. He is the loser because I sent him packing. I have enough to deal with!

I am 47 and have been experiencing this for 18 months or so. I have had a test for FSH levels, which came back normal but that was a while ago and the doctor says it is just a snapshot of that month.

So fed up with it, feel old, ugly and useless.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Hugs to all x

Kim, 12/18/2008 4:46:41 PM
I too am glad to find this site. My body hurts all the time. Seems like it is worse when my period takes forever to come down. Like this month, had a few light spots around the 4th and 5th and then nothing else but a whole lot of deep aches and pains, headaches, nausea, muscle spasms, back pain, dry eyes , absolutely no sex drive just the whole works. It does help at least to know that I am not alone.
I guess we just have to hang in there.

stephanie, 12/30/2008 10:38:41 AM
Im glad I found this site , its good to know ALL woman have issues w/ their cycles . Im 36 yrs old , and been on my period for the past 11 days , never have i went this long before and the cramps / blood clots are just unbearable at times. My cycles are usually normal every month lasting 5-7 days , but 11 days its getting a bit ridiculus ... Is this ok ? or should I go see a dr. when I finally stop ?

Leslie, 12/30/2008 12:27:01 PM
I have been on the pill for the last 11 years or so. I am going to be 45 next month. My last 2 periods have been off. The first one I passed huge clots and it was very heavy. The next one, much lighter, no clots, but it doesn't want to end. It was fine, no bleeding after the 6th day....normal right. My husband and I had sex and I started to bleed again. Bled for 3 days, have had 1 day with no bleeding and started again last night. Is this normal? Will call the Dr. for an appt. for next week.

Holly, 1/10/2009 6:08:27 PM
So glad this site is available-thanks for all the great info! I'm 48 and guess i've started the "wonderful" menopause years:( my periods are lasting longer and heavier--then spotting and then starting again...can only hope it stops soon but will just let nature take it's course.Don't want to take hormones so hope everyone can deal with me till it's over.

Deirdre, 1/12/2009 9:08:41 AM
I have started with small warm flashes. Before it becomes uncomfortable I start breathing in thru the nose out thru the nose and telling myself to relax. If I have on light layers I start peeling clothes. My spouse doesn't seem to understand me keeping the bedroom cooler. He insists on turning up the heat. I think I may think about separate sleeping arrangements. As far as my sex drive? Depends on what time of the month it is? Recently my spouse started his own business and he is stressed. I would love just companionship, walks, hugs, etc-sex is not the object, but he is so stressed he snores in front of the tv. Thank GOD for my 2 dogs they give me lots of companionship and unconditional love. My periods are not regular. Last period lasted over 14 days and I had a light discharge for 6 days afterwards. I have been practicing yoga for 11 years and teaching for 6 years and I highly recommend it for anyone going thru this things called menopause. Have you ever wondered why they call cessation of the menses MENopause and a women priest a "nun" because she isn't getting none? Things that make you go hmmmm. Thanks so much for sharing. I am going to the health food store to look for an all natural supplement.

Lore, 1/14/2009 8:14:58 PM

Vicki, 2/4/09 12:37 PM, 2/4/2009 12:45:20 PM
I'm 49 and will be 50 in May. I have been having irregular period since my last 30s. Sometimes they were so heavy I though I going to bleed to death. I'd soak a super tampon and a super pad in less than an hour. I have found it helpful to only wear pads, not tampons. The flow was pushing the tampons out!!! I also feel that the flow is slowed by the tampon. Anyway, now I have no idea when my periods coming. I try to be ready at all times. My husband just had prostate surgery. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year. He isn't able to achieve an erection, which makes sex for us next to impossible. I don't have a very strong sex drive, but I do enjoy it from time to time as a way to relieve stress and make me feel like an attractive, vital woman. I've having a hard time going through perimenopause and dealing with depression myself, while trying to encourage my husband. My husband is very young to have had prostate cancer. He is only 51. I am exercising and eating healthfully to relieve the stress. Although, I've recently been laid off, which hasn't helped me feel any better. Any advice? Thanks.

milagors, 2/22/2009 4:47:21 PM
omg god bless u women i thought i was dying i am going thru the irregular now back heavy and two week phase on top of being chronically ill i get so panicked due to the lose of blood if i have a parital hyster will this alleviate i have become a prisoner to my ovaries this is awful

franny, 2/25/2009 9:17:22 PM
I am 44 years old. I haven't had my period for 65 days. I also experience night sweats, insomnia, and moodiness. I have no children. I have a very loving husband, but I think it is hard for him to understand this process (menopause). I am such a control freak, I am not enjoying the sense of not knowing when my next period will come or if it will come. My mom told me that when she went thru menopause she had an unexpected heavy period and bled through her clothes and onto the chair she was sitting on. I would totally freak out if this happened to me. Oh, I forgot to mention that I am chronically fatigued and low on vitamin d. I am addressing that with supplements.

Diane, 3/20/2009 9:25:56 PM
Hi I', 44 and have been having similar symptoms for about a year. I have been on Zoloft for PMDD for about 9 years. I saw my gyn recently about peri-menopuaseand she switched me to Prozac which is working wonders!! No HRT - the anti-depressants are just enough to take the "edge" off! They work!!

sharlene, 3/27/2009 12:22:56 AM

Hi Sharlene,
First make sure you are not pregnant,if not then many you need to see your ob gyn.they will be able to order test to tell if you are going thru perimenopause.I pray everything will be o.k.

Nicki, 4/11/2009 5:38:34 PM
Hi - so glad I found this site! I turned 46 last month and am sharing lots of our symptoms. My GP says I'm too young. My skin burns at night, I cry all the time and can't seem to lose weight. But, worst of all is the bouts of dizziness - it's so scary. i thought it was something realyly serious but so many ladies seem to experience this. Pleeease - does anyone know what might help this particular symptom? I can cope with anything else but not this. Thanks.

courtney, 4/18/2009 10:17:55 AM
Hey everyone I am 36 I will be 37 in October, I have been going thru hot flashes extreame nervousness , no sex drive, vaginal dryness, dizziness , sometime the dizziness is so bad it makes me feel like I cant get out of bed, It wouldnt be so bad if I wasnt trying to raise 2 kids. I know it is perimenopause. I feel so sorry for you ladies, sometimes you feel you have no one to talk to and doctors just dont want to believe you they would rather put you on a tranquillizer . Hope you all have a great day.

Grace, 4/21/2009 11:28:54 AM
I have been getting uti's, gerd and dizziness with imbalance for a few months now. I am 47 and I think it all started about 5 years ago when I started getting tension headaches which lasted for about 3 months, then the occasional migrane and uti's on and off since then. Have all sorts of tests done and have all been normal. The doctor has said the imbalance and dizziness is probably due to an inner ear infection but just brushes off the idea of perimenopause. All I can do is just try and get through this, one day at a time.

linda, 5/4/2009 10:12:53 PM
i am 45 and my period is now 10 days late. i feel bloated but no tender breasts. i have had two miscarriages in the past five years. during premenopause does a person still feel bloated, etc? i will take a pregnancy test tomorrow.

cece, 5/15/2009 7:57:51 PM
gailee,
i am so sorry that you are married to such an insensitive jerk. I wish someone would kick them in the b___s as hard as they could then you could ask them if they are in the mood, bet he wouldn't be. i would second guess his love and concern for you. life is too short to be miserable.

janice, 5/21/2009 9:06:06 PM

I'm 42 and have been having irregular period for the first time . This period isn't stopping with heavy bleeding and clots. The doctor prescribed birth control to regulate me,but they put me in a mood swing. Of course the period stopped while I took the pill but once I stopped my period has returned heavy and flowing like a dam.I have been tested for ovarian cancer, fibroids and thank God that was negative but how do I stop my period with having a hysterectomy or taking all those experimental drugs. Please help

Jessica of San Diego, 6/12/2009 4:32:33 PM
Hey Ladies, I turned 36 in May, (I have 1 child - my 11 year-old daughter) and I want to say thanx for all the candid testimony - it helps so much! The only thing I haven't read about yet from anyone's posts, it the way my nose and ears suddenly turn beet red when I am experiencing my hot flashes. Sure, it looks hilarious. If I have to be out and about, I cover my nose with concealer! Ha! But I wear my hair up most of the time, so my beet-red ears are quite obvious - like mini radiators. My husband actually likes my hot flashes 'cuz he's naturally a bit on the cold side. Since the hot flashes started about a year ago, my libido has gone thru the roof. My husband likes that too. So far the bad side effects are cystic acne and dizziness. I'm learning to take a different approach to skincare and I'm taking a few more vitamins. I go to the gym M-F with my husband, and that seems to be the most important commitment I've made to my health in the last couple of years. I have not started HRT, but I haven't ruled it out for the future, if this peri-menopause gets crazy. For now, I am trying to invent a way to carry around my own personal air conditioning unit strapped to my back. Keep sharing ladies! God Bless.

PJ, 6/12/2009 8:44:19 PM
I am so glad to have found this site! I have sat here for quite a while reading all the posts sometimes feeling my mouth fall open. I am SO glad to see it is NOT all in my head! I just turned 40 and asked my OB/GYN and my PCP if I could be pre-menopausal after describing my symptoms, and they both said "no way...you're too young". Now after all the stories I have read here I KNOW I am right!! For months I have been wondering if I am just going crazy! My periods were getting so bad that I had an endometrial eblation a few months ago. I had the hot flashes and night sweats for quite a while before that, but now over the last few months my moods have become unbelievable! From extreme anger to uncontrollable crying spells...I'm all over the board! My husband doesn't know what to think. I didn't know what to think! Wasn't sure if it had something to do with the surgery or if it was perimenopause. Maybe it's both...but either way now I know I should be more forceful with my doctor about getting a true reading on what's going on and figure out what to do about it. Who knows maybe I'll be in one of my moods when I see him next...

Sheila, 6/12/2009 9:42:02 PM
I am 53 and I think I am in Perimenopause. I have very heavy regular periods, everey 28 days. I also have bad cramps, but not hot flashes. I am not sure that this is Perimenopause because I am also very overweight. I just want it to be over soon. I am getting very depressed.

Tracy, 6/13/2009 6:42:25 AM
I have been reading the posting and am so glad I am not alone. Four years ago I had a hysterectomy during which my uterus was removed but not my ovaries. Everything was good until about a year ago when I strted thinking I was going crazy. I went to my doctor and he said that it could be early menopause but he doubts it because I was only 42 at the time. Nothing more was done and my symptoms are only getting worse. The hot flashes are bad but the mood swings are the worst. My husband describes it as extreme PMS. I get so irritable and can go from being a raging maniac to a crying lump in a heart beat. It gets so bad that I can't stand to be around myself sometimes and I have to go off somewhere quiet by myself just to calm down. This isn't always possible because I care for my 85yr old mother. I also have two teenagers at home. It is very comforting to know that I am not alone and that I am not going out of my mind.

diane, 6/14/2009 4:21:16 PM
just started to get the night sweats... way to deal with it.. keep those gel-like ice packs handy! i wrap one up in a hand towel. lasts for a long time! good luck, ladies! :)

cindy, 6/28/2009 8:01:18 PM
I am 51 going through most of the same symptoms, no hot flashes only night sweats now. I have never missed a month without having a cycle since I started menopause at 45. I do spot for 5 days before my cycle and four days after. I have to always wear a light pad even if I am not on my period. I had very heavy cycles (fibroids) until my OB/GYN placed a Mirana IUD three years ago. Periods lighten and pain went away within a few months. Weight gain is a real problem Inow exercise 4 to 5 days a week just to maintain my weight at 165 lbs. I am 5' 7" and trying to wear a size 12 anything is hard. Mood swings are better now that I exercise so much. Yoga is very important to maintain a positive mental frame of mind.

Anna from Montreal, 6/30/2009 1:45:38 PM
I am starting perimenopause and what a great place to come to and read what others are going thru' and not feel like I'm alone. I'm a Type 1 diabetic - so have always been used to dealing with hormonal issues - up until starting perimenopause - periods never bothered me - but when I've had a period for 3 weeks - and I'm feeling so drained and useless - well - I'm hoping this doesn't last too long - and like one gal said way above - not have to pay taxes on feminine care products anymore - and spend it on other FUN things. Off I go to get some KOTEX pads - oh and more sardines (apparently my tiredness according to a nurse friend will be elevated abit if I eat more iron enriched foods - sardines along with a glass of OJ - is supposed to be good). Stay smiling and positive everyone - we're all in this together!!

I am 49 and have always been very regular with pretty normal periods.I felt a little crampy yesterday and got my period last night but I just had it two weeks ago! It's kind of dark and not overly heavy but definitely there. My dr. office said that when you are beginning Menopause your periods stop or become irregular not come more often. I'm going in for a Pap test in two weeks, but in the meantime I'm SCARED!Many of you seemed to mention having this as a pre menopause sign. Can you fill me in your experiences with this issue? Thanks

Autumn , 7/14/2009 9:31:59 PM
I went to the doctor today and was diagnosed with perimenopause. He perscribed a antidepresent to help with the mood swings, which made my husband happy. I'm 38 with two children ages 11 and 3, which doesn't help with the mood swings at times. I've only had one hot flash but my periods are getting shorter, which is a blessing. The office I work in is very cold and at times, I find myself complaining how hot it is at my desk. Since I was 35, I could not wait until this started happening in a weird way. I always thought it was going to be a new chapter for my body and life. I am comfortable with the thought of going through it, with a little optimism to keep me going. It has been a little over 2 months since my first hot flash but I do have night sweats periodically. Can anybody tell me from the first hotflash, how quickly it will progress.

Caroln, 7/18/2009 6:22:02 AM
My mother is 74 and still has hot flashes. She had a histerectomy, I thought hot flashes would stop befor that age.

night_spirit_uk, 7/19/2009 3:30:59 PM
hi i was diagnosed in peri nearly 5 years ago and im now just a few months of 40 and i am still getting the hot flushes regular and i have more then i did to begin with my night sweats were quite bad at first and frequant but now they have slowed down a bit thank goodness and my periods have only just gotten shorter and lighter in my cycle my mum finnished her periods a few years ago and is still having them regular too she is in her late 50`s i have heard someone still having them in thier 80`s i think it just depends on the individual person

Meg, 7/26/2009 4:01:02 PM
I'm 44 and my periods for the last year have been inconsistent, many months I get them every two weeks. Right now, I've had a light period for over two weeks now. I keep thinking it's finishing but it keeps going. I feel better after reading some of the similar comments. When I talk to my doctor about this, she mentions it's perimenopause. Who knew it could be this fun? Yeah, right.

Susan, 8/1/2009 11:21:05 AM

I was having hot flashes mood swings and palpitations also flares of terrible anger. I will be 50 next month. My periods are only four days long. They used to be 7-10 days. Ihave not had any test to see if I have perimenopause but I am pretty sure I do. My doc put me on atidepressants. I also have other health issues so I take several meds I don;t know if that is part of the problem with the sweating. Good Luck to all of you.

Cheryl, 9/9/2009 3:10:28 PM
Hi to all. I was searching the web for perimenopause and red ears and got to this page. I'm 47 with irregular periods for about 9 months now. The hot flashes in the ears (and sometimes nose) can be quite embarrassing - and are often set off by wine at a dinner meeting (which I have a lot of). I know flashes are usually from neck up, but I wanted to ask if anyone has experienced similar burning/red sensations in from neck down (knees, feet, elbows) or am I one of a kind?

Sheryl, 9/24/2009 11:10:57 PM
I am 52. After having very light periods for the last 9 months, on Labor Day weekend i got a very, very heavy one and had to cancel plans with friends. Embarrasing!! Can someone who has heavy periods tell me what protection to use to avoid an accident. When flow comes gushing out, have had leaking onto my clothing. Staying close to a bathroom is not always possible. Any help would be very much appreciated.

La, 9/29/2009 3:40:19 PM
When I was 34, I started having hot flashes. They lasted a few months and went away. Then I started experiencing intense anger which would often quickly escalate into rage. I had never been an angry person. I attributed this change in my emotions to my husband's recent death and the cancer that preceded it. But now, at age 39, the mood swings are even more severe. My boyfriend isn't the most sensitive guy in the world, but I fly into a rage when he upsets me, and even in my own mind I am "over-responding." It is playing havoc with our relationship. I feel depressed and anxious and filled with despair but dont' understand why. Also, my periods, which used to last 6 days and be heavy, now last only about 3 days and are very light. My mom started menopause at age 35. I am wondering if I am dealing with perimenopause.

Shannon, 10/1/2009 11:35:10 AM
Had my period 9/19 through 9/23. Thought I was done. But NOOOOOOO. Started spotting pink yesterday and today am @ heavy flow. So frustrating. I'm 36 and have been having hot flashes in my face for 3 years. In the last two years, my period has started to act really weird. My doctor wants to do a hysterectomy, but I'm putting it off because I don't want the hormone fluctuation. It's very frustrating.

I'm 39 yrs.old and I have been on my period for 22 days straight. Most of it has been pretty heavy too.I didn't have one last month, then this happens.I think I may be going through menopause too.I had my first period when I was 9 yrs.old,I wonder if that has anything to do with going into menopause earlier in life than normal.I was on depo for about 7 yrs..and didn't have a period at all when I was on the shot.,which I loved.I started gaining weight and they took me off of it.I haven't had a shot since April of 08 so I know it's not the shot doing this to me.I haven't used any birth control since the depo.I know I have got to go to the dr.and I truly dread it.Has anyone else had a period that lasted this long that was quiet heavy with alot of clots,I know gross right? but that's the only way to explain it.I'm scared and really could use some reassurance that things are going to be alright.

Seriously! Just realized my clitoris has almost disappeared! Scariest thing I have ever experienced. Can anyone out there help with natural therapies? I am 50 and have been going through menopause for about three years. Need answers on how to return my physiology to normal.
