Whether you’ve just started your period or you’ve had it for years now, you probably still have questions about it. Here are answers to questions many women have.
Q. What is PMS? A. PMS stands for premenstrual syndrome. A few days before your period, you may start feeling some soreness or heaviness in your breasts. Your stomach may feel bloated. You may get a few pimples. And you may be more crabby, sad or emotional than usual. It may sound awful, but for most women it’s not that big a deal. Some women have PMS problems, and some women have no problems at all. Exercise and hot baths can help level out the mood swings. Some say vitamin B, herb teas and massage can help. If your PMS is so horrible it seems to be getting in the way of your life, ask your doctor for options.
Q. What can I do about menstrual cramps during my period? A. Menstrual cramps vary in intensity, from woman to woman and even from cycle to cycle. You can take aspirin or other non-prescription painkillers, do mild exercise (stretches are good), or relax with a book or in front of the TV. Warmth is often helpful; try taking a hot bath or putting a heating pad on your stomach or lower back. You can also get your mother, your sister or a friend to rub your stomach. If you frequently experience severe cramps, talk to your doctor about treatment for them.
Q. My breasts always hurt right before my period. Why? How can I prevent this? A. Your estrogen and progesterone levels are fluctuating, causing fluid to build up in your breasts and making them sore and heavy-feeling. This is completely normal. You could try over-the-counter PMS medicine, avoiding salt and caffeine, even wearing a supportive sports bra if your breasts really bother you.
Q. Why do I feel fat during my period? A. Just before and during your period, your body tends to retain water. This added fluid might make you feel full and your breasts feel tender. It’s normal to gain a couple of pounds during this time of the month and lose them when your period is over. If you feel like a water balloon, pull on some loose, comfortable clothing. Avoiding salt immediately before and during your period is also a good idea, because salt increases water retention.
Q. How much blood do I lose during a period? A. It varies. For most women, it’s around four tablespoons, but for some, it’s as much as a cup. (If you’re bleeding more than that, see your doctor). Sometimes the blood is red, sometimes it’s brown, sometimes it’s a mix of both, and sometimes it’s got some clotted bits in it. Variety is normal, and every woman is different.
Q. What if my flow is really heavy and I have to use lots of pads? A. It’s probably just that: a heavy flow, which can often happen the first day or two. For some women, a heavy flow is normal. If you have a prolonged heavy flow, you should check with your doctor.
Q. What does it mean if my period is late or irregular? A. Irregular periods for the first couple of years are normal. But after that, when you’ve started to menstruate regularly, missing a period may be a sign of pregnancy (if you are sexually active). Other causes of irregularity include a change in diet, increase in exercise or drug use. The best advice is to chat with your doctor if you’re concerned.
Q. Can I actually get pregnant during my period? A. Yes. Women with very short (21 days or so) or irregular cycles may well be ovulating while they’re still bleeding. When I have my period these days, like when its the fourth day, it stops, and then the next day is goes on. Why does this happen?
Another someone, 6/7/2008 6:06:49 PM Hey Someone... I don't think a week is too long. That's about the right duration, i believe...and about the periods which stop for a day and come the other day, it's probably because of ur diet, sleep or stress. I don't think u should worry about it.
just me, 6/9/2008 6:12:36 PM Ugh....I hate it when it does that....you think its gone then BAM!!! It comes back...I use to get my period long and heavy too, with bad cramps then I went on birth control. It helps a lot, makes it more accurate, less cramps, and lighter which is better. Also, some kind help with acne.

To Amber, 6/15/2008 1:23:48 PM The blood clots are normal; I think a lot of women have them. It's the wall of your uterus shedding the lining, which results in a combination of blood and tissue.
moni, 6/17/2008 2:35:09 AM hi, I normally have my period on a regular cycle, mostly just off by 2 or3 days but this month It has been lasting longer than any other time 13 days now. Iam going to see my doctor but iam really worried, Should I be? Iam am sexually active but Iam scared to try anything now.

Tiffany, 6/18/2008 9:14:46 AM Moni, I know exactly what you are going through. My previous period was four and a half weeks long, ended for two weeks and am now on a "normal" period. It's a good thing that you are going to the doctor, but worrying about it won't help. If you've been really stressed, that can cause you to have a longer than normal period. As far as doing anything sexually, that is up to you and your partner. Personally, I don't let my period get in the way, whether it's a normal period or not. Hope this helps, good luck!

Ria, 6/19/2008 3:20:56 PM I've been wondering what the meaning of regular period is? I have regular cycles in terms of not missing it but the cycle length varies. I normally have short cycles and bleed for 3-4 days. But the cycle length varies from 23 to 27 days. I wonder if this is normal. This time I bled heavy (but thankfully for 4 days only, but also passed a big clot at the end of it). Is passing a big clot occassionally normal? I didn't talk to my doc because I just wanna wait and watch for my next period.
Allison, 6/21/2008 12:37:50 PM My period is anything but regular. It varies alot and it has for years. My doc. tried many meds but they turn me into an emotional nutcase. So i guess at this point being irregular is regular for me.
Marilyn, 6/22/2008 9:04:27 AM I have irregular periods...anywhere between 19-23 days. But, now 12 days after it ended, I have it again. It scares me, because my mom died from ovarian cancer. And one of her symptoms was spotting.

Ria, 6/24/2008 10:13:09 AM Cameron, Yes, I think 3-4 months is a long time to have gone through irregular periods. But, it also depends on the age and the phase of life you are in. Suppose you are 40 plus or so, then I guess these are premenopause symptoms. On the other hand if you are well in 20s, 30s and are trying for pregnancy, then this would be a matter of concern. Even otherwise, I think your regular and consistent cycles are indicative of your reproductive health. So why don't you see a gynic to find out the cause? Maybe they can fix it.

michele, 6/30/2008 2:36:25 AM I haven't had unprotected sex for a few months now... but shortly after I had I was getting late periods the first time it was a week late the second time it was almost 2 weeks late which was last month I took 4 pregnancy tests which came out negative then went to the doctor and took another test which was also negative and the next day my period came. My period is late again this month by a week and i'm just worried and stressed out wondering why it is repeatedly late these last 3-4 months when they are usually always on time. (just for information i'm almost 23 yrs old... and within this last month and a half have put on almost 8 lbs.) any input will put my mind at ease... all my dr was able to tell me was its probably just stress.... however i havent yet been to a gynecologist about this.

M.****, 7/5/2008 7:52:59 AM I am 39 and have not had a period in 4 years I have also started to have problems with facial hair (excessive) especially in the chin area. I hav e not seen a GYN but my Primary Physician has done blood test and confirmed that I am not menapausal nor Pre-menapausal. What else can be causing this? I am married and I can say with great confidence that I also speak for my spouse when I say we have not had other sexual partners in 18 yrs of marriage, so I feel I can eliminate STDs I have also experience extreme weight gain and extreme stress along with alot of medicinal drug use, including Methadone for Pain control. I know I need to see a GYN asap , however until I have the opportunity to can someone make any suggestions? I'm hoping that the brief background I provided will help.
" A MOM", 7/5/2008 8:19:21 AM This is for Carrie, and I hope it helps: My mom never shed light on the existence of Tampons to me, so I found them on my own and pretty much with the same problems you are having. When my own daughter got her period she began and stil prefers pads, probably because she has not experienced the fresher feeling I eventually felt was I successfully learned to wear tampons, hoever what I did do with my daughter is give her a mirror with a handle and told her to lye down on her bed or sit as if on a toilet and get visually familiar with her vaginal area to lears where to insert a tampon and although I explained how to I also showed her hiow I inserted one. At the time she was only 11 and not the 15 year old teenager who is now closer to her friends and tends to shy away from personal topics with "uncool mom". However I think it may help you to get familiar with your own body with a mirror, also once inserted it will hurt and the feel of a foreign object inside will b feel very unconfortable especially if you do not insert the tampon far enough. It might help if you start out with a thin tampon with a smooth platic applicator, or buy a few different kinds to see which fits you better. Also, causing disconfort is the insertion of the tampon against a dry area so in addition to a smooth applicator I'm thinking it may nor hurt to initially even use a very simple lubricant. These are just thoughts & suggestions from "a Mom" , NONE OF IT IS MEDICAL ADVICE AT ALL., But I do hope it helps. Good luck Carrie!

Lauren, 7/13/2008 12:01:59 PM M.**** it may be polycystic ovarian syndrome. some of the symptoms include infrequent menstrual periods, no menstrual periods, and/or irregular bleeding and increased hair growth on the face, chest, stomach, back, thumbs, or toes—a condition called hirsutism (HER-suh-tiz-um). check with your doctor and look it up online.

cly, 7/21/2008 1:54:06 PM okayy so whats up with all these commercials advertising special pads and tampons for ADULT WOMEN? young girls have there periods too. im 13 and i get very heavy periods. everytime i get my period, i ruin AT LEAST 2 pairs of underwear. im not a big fan of tampons, but ive used them before, it was very difficult to get it in properly. and when i did, it was veryy uncomfortable. also, all the pads i try are either too big, too long, too short, too thin, i can never get the right one. and when i go to sleep [since i usually sleep on my back] the blood leaks down my vagina and onto my underwear, even when i pull my pad back!

My mom explains to me that its normal for some people due to the extreme about of pressure your body is under during this time. My symp. usually include: extreme irribility and pms, terrible stomach aches, sometimes dirraeah--that I dont quite understand, but ok; also the headachs are known for me. Another, incase you have this prob. are nosebleeds. These aren't as often as the stomach aches. I have the stomach ache at least 1-2 times a month, the beg. of my period and the middle of my period, those are my heavest days, and my worst stomach aches.

What I suggest is to use the biggest pad you can find like ultra thin with wing over night. Sometime I use always the one that says for size 14 and up those are really good. Yeah tampons are a drag I tried one and I guess I didn't use it right and I had blood all over me. Just take your time if you try them again because I heard they're really worth it. Although I haven't tried them myself.

Mary, 7/28/2008 3:01:11 PM PCOS ....other symptoms can be VERY heavy and prolonged periods, ( soaking a super - size tampon till it falls out in less than 2 hrs) "chocloate syrup" -like discharge, very LARGE clots or chunks of endomitrial tissue, spotting between periods, and BAD cramps. My Dr. put me on progesterone, one wk/month and it has made a WORLD of difference and is cheap too! The only thing it won't fix is the facial hair. :-(

janet, 7/29/2008 8:07:56 AM my 16 teen year been having her period since may 19 and i took her to the doctor and they gave her the pill and put her on iron meds and nothing is working also they had her get iron iv"s and that helped a little and she had to be hospitalized and got 2 pints of blood and some medican to slow the bleeding down.but she still going she had a 2 wk from it and now back on the doctor been testing her for almost 2 months now and see nothing wrong but i know something is not right this isn't normal so if anyone can give me any information please do so it been so stressful please help!!!!!!

M, 7/30/2008 10:25:59 AM Jayyy, I felt that way when I first started my period. I didn't tell my mom for a few days. But you need to tell her. She can help you because she knows what you're going through. You could e-mail her. Or you could just say "Mom, can I talk to you privately?". Hope this helps and good luck on telling her.

M, 7/30/2008 10:50:59 AM Waffles, You can't swim during your period if you wear pads. You have to wear a tampon when you swim. Someboody:) , You will probably start your period soon. Talk to your mom to see she got her first period because that can help you figure out when you might start. And don't worry because most girls start between the ages of 9 and 16. 11-13 is the average age of when girls start. Also you might want to keep some pads at home so when you get you period you can start using them. Hope this advice helps!

T28, 8/3/2008 12:22:29 PM hi ladies update went to the doc and she said that i am not preg and that she does not know why my period is still not here. so she drew blood to check my hormone levels to B sure that is not the reason 4 my missed period. she also said 2 continue taking my b-control until the pack is empty and see if i have my menstrual then if not we have to do further testing. April13, 8/6/2008 2:24:09 PM I think that if your period stays irregular it's probably because of the stress, your hormones may be out of wack. For me im 13 and I got my period when I was 8. My periods were always irregular. Then I went to see my doctor and she found out I had a cysts on my ovary. I had to have it removed it was the size of a baby. For Marie you can go swimming on your period. I've done that before.You might get cramps but I didn't. If you're going swimmming in the ocean, I wounld'nt do that since sharks are atracted to blood.

I only bled for about 4 days after that, and then 2 weeks later I started bleeding and it still hasn't stopped!!! What is going on?!?!?!? I am 23 so I know this is not normal... What should I think??? It doesn't hurt anymore, just a lot of blood....

I prayed to God and it went off for two weeks and now it's back on again. I really know how other women feels when they period stays on too too long and you're scarred to go to the Dr. or don't have medical insurance. So I will continue to pray for every women on this site. I wish you all well!

jennie, 8/10/2008 12:23:33 PM talk about irregular...i'll go for about a week or longer..stop a few days and then go for another week...my periods are excrutiating...complete with horrible cramps, nausea, dizziness, and heavy clotting. i've been on birth control before and it didn't do anything. my family has a history of various problems, grandmother had ovarian cancer, mother has endometriosis and cists, and my aunt had, i think she said it was a deviated cervix. was wondering if anything has been proven as far as endometriosis being hereditary.

*Marissa*, 8/11/2008 6:57:43 PM anne: when i got my first period, i didn't feel anything. its different from girl to girl, but you may feel it as i didn't. best thing to do is be on the lookout and carry extra pantyliners, ya know, *just in case*. julieee: just like i said to anne, be on the lookout and carry extras. lmarie: please you should REALLY tell your mom... when i had to tell my mom, it was really uncomfortable because she's just kinda embarassing and she took it well even though i blushed the whole time. approach her when she's busy, she'll be happy to talk and have some company. if she's pushy, stay away until she's comfortable. you need the guts and i hope dearly that you don't get TSS from all those tampons. keep up on background knowledge about these things so situations aren't as uncomfortable as they could be. keep reading advice here and other places. good luck =]
I'm scarred!, 8/11/2008 7:01:34 PM Linda, i'm 36 and my period just started staying on for a month sometimes my breast hurt and I feel heavy, i have seven aunts and all of them had a hestr.... and all of them had very very heavy periods one dr. told me that it is premeno... but i know that if you are a big woman and is stressed out, your period might stay on long periods of time. Some ladies might have to change their diets, that might help.

I think it's the "change", think about this, you had your period all these years and all of a sudden your period wants to "change" I really do think it's premeno.....try not to stress to much remember weight gain and stress is the # 1 reason why so many ladies period change. I have a 3 year old and a 5 mo. old I just got off my period around the 7th of this mo. and yesterday I had slight light pink spotting. Then it was gone and now today I had it again only it was slightly heavier but again, didn't last all day. I shouldn't start my period til the 30th of this mo. brittany, 8/14/2008 11:16:05 PM i'm not a wise person or an expert on this topic (i'm 17), but i'd like to answer some questions. some were already answered. tampons don't hurt. in fact, if put in correctly, you don't feel them at all. it's a tad scary at first (had to use them my first period, my class was going to a water park) it doesn't hurt. and you can't lose your virginity from using a tampon. don't know if you can wear pads swimming, wouldn't really advise it. my cousin went swimming w/ a pantiliner cuz she forgot she had it on, she was fine. so idk about a pad. but a tampon is DEFINITELY better. don't be afraid, i swear it doesn't hurt. :)

Kirsten, 8/20/2008 3:38:35 AM This is for "worried". I had a problem with leaking when I was in high school too. Have you thought about using tampons? They usually last longer than pads so theres less of a chance of leaking. If you're still worried about leaking you could wear a panty liner too.

Marissa, 8/25/2008 5:42:59 PM Christina, don't worry that is TOTALLY normal. Since your period is when the tissue from your vaginal wall comes out, sometimes it doesn't dissolve fully into blood, so it looks kind of like lumps and chunks of squishy stuff.

saral, 9/22/2008 8:47:30 AM i'm 27 and i have a 6 yr old daughter, and i've had a lot of issues w/ my period since then, so maybe some of the stuff i have gone thru might help some more of you.... after i had my daughter i had an iud (intra uteran device) to not get pregnant and then it made me have my period constantly for a year, so i switched to the shot, and my period lasted another 9 months straight, then i went on the patch and it straightened me up but it fell off a lot so now i''m on the pill and it has really straightened up, but if i miss a pill or two it can make my period really irregular, like 2 in one month or skipping one all together, then the pills made me really moody, so the dr. put me on one that is the same horomones all month long, but since i have changed pill typed my periods have been a little irregular, my dr. has told me this is all normal.... also a friend of mine was on the depo shot for a long time, and it took her a while but after the shot got completely out of her system, well she has had no problem getting pregnant (a 2 yr old a 1 yr old and now shes preggers w/ twins) so i think w/ the shot if you want to get pregnant afterwards, just be patient.... i do know though that the horomones in all the different types of birthcontrol can mess you cycle up and it takes a while to readjust, just talk to your dr./mom/friend and get their oppinion, if your really scared make and appt at the dr. office, they will tell you if its normal or not.

lynn, 9/27/2008 11:09:26 AM Stress can cause your period to become irregular. It is also irregular when you first start and takes a while to get into a schedule. Don't worry about it. Also, don't let your friend freak you out by saying something like your pregnant. I would assume that, you being 13, there is no way that you could ever be pregnant. Just wait and if it doesn't come this month it will probably come next month.

ebony, 10/10/2008 8:57:52 AM okay, i am a sexually active woman of 18 years with only one partner, so pid shouldnt be a problem. we have no stds. but in august my period didnt come like it was supposed to. i did experience some light bleeding, more after intercourse, sometimes randomly. by the second week in sept i still hadnt had my period and had taken two pregnancy tests, both of which were negative. I finally got my period in the first week in october. I am one of those ppl who always think they may have an underlying disease or syndrome to make up for these symptoms. so i would like to know if any has known anyone to have any type of cancer that causes headaches, body aches, or anything of that nature? please let me know. i'm probably just overreacting. my great-grandmother and great aunt both had problems with their reproductive organs: ovarian cancer and fibroids. any advice would be appreciated. thanks,

I do get a period because for about 3 or 4 days it's extremely heavy (and painful). I lost my insurance in the midst of this mess. My company laid serveral people off. Have any of you had this type of bleeding? No ins. & scared. Thanks for any responses.

The last time I spoke to a doctor he told me that I might be going through early menopause, that was in January. My period might go off for about a week (such comfort) but it comes back on for the rest of the month. Try not to stress, and eat healthy. I'm 36 how old are you it has a lot to do with weight gain and stress too. I hope this comfort you a little, you are not alone!

That makes it very hard to know when to be ready for it. So now I just carry a pad and a tampon all the time. My mom says it will get better as I get a little older. At lease I dont suffer from cramps.

My Gyno, not thinking a black girl could have been anorexic, I guess thought it was because I had GAINED weight. (I had gained it back by then,but it had nearly stopped at 16 when I was SKINNY.. Go fig.) Anyway, I've read that either extreme can cause your periods to stop. Later I discovered I had low hormones, which can also cause it to stop and cause the facial hair (unbalanced hormones.). I can't help you with the facial hair because all the women in my family have lots of "hair" so for us it's normal, but I'd get tested for a hormone imbalance, that's what is sounds like.

I have regular periods due to the pill. I attend college and eat pretty healthy and am VERY active, I have been home for the past couple weeks for the holidays and have been eating pretty much junk and haven't been doing much. Today I was outside in the snow and I came in to go to the bathroom and noticed a lot of blood, as if I got my period. I have been bloated for a couple days and thought it was due to eating bad lately. I'm not supposed to get my period for 2 weeks, I am in the middle of my pills and this has never happened. I don't think its a period starting early, I'm thinking just a heavy spotting but I don't know why. Please someone help me out....

I would recommend, however, that you try to hurry to get into the water to avoid any blood coming out. I have done this many times and not had any problems.

I'm Christian and I have learn from parent by telling children it better off to wait until get marry. Pray and ask God and you never know when you get your period...He created us all!!! He never finished, but what I'm really getting at is, is it possible to get pregnant 2 days after your period is finished? Samantha, 1/31/2009 10:45:20 PM For all you ladies that are curious about why your period is delayed...don't automatically assume your pregnant. Take the test if you are sexually active, and if it is negative wait a week if you still haven't gotten your period and try again. If it's still negative remember to stay calm, stress can delay your period...trust me I know. As for the whole irregular period thing, I usually get mine every other month, and that's not with the help of birth control pills or anything. It's just my bodies cycle. I do get rather nervous when I get big clots though...lately I have been getting them a lot and they freak me out...and they look nasty.

My period now last for 6 to 8 days with the 1st 3 days the heaviest. I wear two super night kotex and 1 super Tampon. When I was in my early 20's and 30's I never had regular periods, sometimes they would be skipped for 3 to 6 months at a time. (this was great) I am paying for it now. My doctor wanted to put me on hormones but I don't want to do this. Do you think I may be at the end and ready for Menapuse?

I'm 43 years old and I have been on my period since Jan. 25, 2009 ... it's now almost the end of March. I have gone to my doctor several times and was given something to stop it, but when it came back it was heavier. I have no history of any type of illness and just want this to be over. southern chick, 3/30/2009 5:21:48 PM I hate being a woman for the reason of getting "nature's monthly gift". Mine is so unpredictable. It never seems to come at the same time of month. So becuase i'm still in school, i end up wearing a pad when i think i'm going to get it until i do, just to be safe. Mine is stupid too becuase I get the worst cramps and headaches. Plus, my face breaks out like a nuclear bomb of pimples exploded on me.

My doctor put me on birth control to regulate my period only, I had my tubal ligation 22 years ago so didn't need birth control. Anyway, I stay on the pills for 4 months and then go off for a month so I only get 3 periods a year now. You might want to check with your Gynecologist to see if you are beginning menopause.

six, 4/5/2009 8:12:49 PM krissi, your mom should still be able to show you how to use a tampon even if she doesn't use them. you just put them in your vagina. depending on what kind you use, it may be inserted differently. if you use applicator free, just use your index or middle finger to push it vertically inside until part of your finger is inside of you below it. it may be easier to start with an applicator though. applicators have 2 parts you'll see. a larger top and smaller bottom. hold on to the larger end where it connects to the smaller end. push the larger end in first vertically until all that lefts sticking out is the smaller end. then push the smaller end until it goes inside the larger end. that will insert the tampon inside you. then pull out the entire applicator (large and small ends). the cotton tampon will stay inside you and the string will hang outside you so you can pull on it to remove it when you need to change it. before you try it, just take one and test it. push on it to see how it works. don't be scared. they are much more comfortable and don't hurt.

Usually the first 2 or 3 days it's heavy red blood,but after that is lighter brown blood that doesnt leak or come out too much when im active.2 months ago my period was very short, i had a brown/red blooded leak and that was it.One time my period was so bad whenever i walked i could feel blood coming out, sometimes it would stain my pants or shorts cause it came out so much. My very first period was about a year ago, it was just spots, i didn't get my real period until the next year.That period was horrible, i had to be careful in the way i slept and walkd, i couldnt be active. Periods are very bipolar sometimes, hehe:D.

Katie, 4/17/2009 2:52:00 PM I know im quiet young, im 16 and in January i got my period like normal, on the 28 but then I didn't get it in Feb. and i took 3 prg. test all negative and ended up getting my period on the11/14 of march, i havent had unprotected sex in quiet a while but anything can happen, when should i be getting my period, will it start coming in the middle of the month or will it go back to it's original cycle? Or is this another thing that only a doctor can help me with?

I had unprotected sex to loosen everything up which worked for an hour of moderate bleeding. I don't feel pregnant like I did when I was, but I'm wondering if it's bad if all of the blood doesn't come out because I'm still bloated.
Katie, 4/24/2009 9:50:51 AM benecia, I get cramps when I ovulate. I talked to my gyno and she said that it is normal to have pain like cramps when you are ovulating. Though sometimes it can mean you have a cyst on your ovary. Maybe that is why you are having cramps but are not on your period

somebody 2224, 4/27/2009 2:31:05 PM So ok, I have noticed a lot of questions about periods in general. First, I got mine in 5th grade and am now 22 years old. Mine started out being 5 days and only about 2 of them were actually heavy. The first and last were just spotting. It is completely normal to have heave and lite days! So if you have any combination like that it should be fine. If it is really heavy everday and it makes you feel lite headed, I would advise seeing a doctor. Now it is about 7-9 days long and some days are heavy and other arent. I have bad cramps and am always tired and have no energy and am very emotional when mine is here. It is all just because your hormones are out of balance. It is normal. Some birth control pills can help with this. Or over the counter medicine can help. Otherwise, it is just how it goes unfortunately. As far as putting a tampon in, it is easier if you are sitting on the toilet or standing with one led up. Also DO NOT TENSE UP when you got o put it in. That can cause pain!!! Push it in at an angle- towards your spine. You will know you have it right when you really can't feel it anymore. If it is not far enough in there will be some discomfort and if you are dry it may be dificult to get it in. Stress can cause your period to come late or make it be different from the month before. Use protection when you have sex- especially if you are young!!! If you are afraid to talk to you mom, talk to a friends mom or keep posting questions on here. Hope this helps

I got on birth control for about a year and it helped make it regular. Generally before I start I have signs like lower back pain, short tempered, and my boobs are very tender. I also have headaches. So maybe look for signs like those. Sometimes I have those symptoms up to two weeks before I actually start. It is normal to not have a pattern yet. It may take you a while to get one. Usually it is about 18- 25 days apart for me. Very rarely will you start the same day every month. So I usally start the third week of every month. Sometimes on the monday and sometimes the thursday. So I know that there may be a couple days off from the last month. So don't worry, unless you are sexually active, then I would advise--until you get on a schedule--use protection every time or even get on birth control. It will save you a lot of stress- which can also make your period start late or early. I hope this helps!
Daphne, 4/29/2009 1:29:22 PM I was on the depo shot for 6 months and bled for the whole six months and now after years of not being on the birth control my period is still weird. I will get it for 3 days and it will go away for a day then come back the next day for a very short time period and then go away and come back the next day for about an hour. it has been like this for about a year now and was wondering if anyone had any feed back on what may be going on. I have talked to my doctor about it but he didn't have any helpful answers for me. Thanks all.

Julie, 5/2/2009 11:03:33 AM Hi everyone, I have very regular, very normal periods. It was not always this way. Not until I gave up all animal products. I am no longer consuming all of those hormones (especially in milk), antibiotics or steroids. I do not have any cramps or bloating whatsoever. But then again I also drink my daily supply of water to prevent this. If you want predictable periods, I would suggest the first thing you stop eating/ drinking is dairy products. You will see a HUGE difference. Hope this helps.

I thought I was the last one in my whole age group. Everyone around me had already started. I'll bet you are skinnier and/ or smaller than most of your friends. I was. Don't be worried if you you haven't started yet. Every girl starts on her own time, you body will know when it's ready. If you do wear a pad every day, make sure it is a light one, such as a pantie-liner (much thinner than pads). Watch for typical signs that you may be starting your period soon such as: mood swings (anger or depression), bloating, sudden acne, fatigue, brest tenderness, etc. Also make sure you always have a good supply of feminine products with you at all times - just in case. Remember that a period lasts for more than one day. For most women, about 3-6 days. If you are growing pubic hair, you will probably be starting within the next few months.

My doctor put me on Yasmin and it worked and I was on it for a year maybe 2 and then I lost my medical and haven't been on it. So, now I don't get my periods for a long time and when I do get them they last a long time I had it I was on it for a month and a half, I took Orthocyclen it worked at first, and then my period came back and it's been 2 weeks now that I have been on it, It's really heavy, I have to wake up in the middle of the night just to go to the bathroom and I leak more than usual and there are these awful blood clots that I get EVERY time I go to the restroom and more than 1. I have really bad cramps, backaches, headaches, very emotional at times, and I just started to feel a little light headed. I am in the process of trying to find a job, I have no medical, no kids, and no money, so therefore no doctor will see me. What should I do?? Is this normal or is there seriously something wrong with me??

At first it started out as a real dark brown discharge for about 3 weeks then the 4th week it got really red and heavy like a normal period with light clotting. Mel, 5/20/2009 11:48:50 AM Zee-- Calm down it is absolutely normal not to get your period directly 21-28 days after your very first one. Noting is wrong with you. Your body is changing and adjusting to the new hormones it has encountered as well as the effects these hormones have on different body functions. You should really address your concerns with someone you feel comfortable talking to about this. Maybe your mom or and older sister, or relative but absolutely not your friends-- they are just as confused as you are and will just stress you more. That is one more reason you may not have gotten it yet. Stress will hold off your period so stop worrying about it believe me it will come just when you don't expect it and ruin your day. So keep the necessary products on you just in case. A really long time ago I got my first period 3 months before my 12th birthday and then didn't get it again till after my 12th birthday. I had irregular periods after that for at least a year. Every so often it would skip a month or 2 and then I would have it for 2 weeks. I also had massively intense cramping when i did have my period. My mom took me to a Gynecologist and she gave me medication for my pain and offered suggestions to dealing with an irregular period. My advice is to talk to your mom. By the way Welcome to womanhood! It is a strange roller coaster of a ride but I wouldn't have it any other way.

I had perviously been on it for five years and when I stopped it took about a year for me to have regular periods. So I figured that it might take a few months for my period to start coming back. Well in march of 09 I had a period for two days. Not quite a real period it was lite and it looked like old blood. I assumed that meant I would start having a cycle the following month, but no. To this day I have yet to have any bleeding at all. In stead the past two weeks I've had breast tenderness, they also feel very heavy, and alot of discharge. Just your regular discharge no weird consistancy, smell, or color. Also experience cramping in my right ovary mainly at night. Not sure if its related but I've also had diarhea during the two weeks. I've taken pregnancy tests but all came back negative.

I don't have any sisters, and i'm not close with my mom at all. And i don't really have a close friend that i could as for some advice....so i'm hoping that someone could please help shed some light on my situation. My period seems like it has a mind of its own! I'll have a normal cycle for like 2-3 months but then i won't have another period for 3-4 months. And i'm really worried because i don't know what to do. I know that periods are sometimes irregular for like the first year or so, but it's almost 3 years since my first period and i've maybe had like 14 periods in all. I am very uncomfortable bringin this up with my doc...i'm hoping someone could pleeeeeeeeeease give me some advice. My last period was in like February, maybe even earlier.....and it's now June, and i still haven't had another one.....is this still normal?

Angie, 6/8/2009 11:26:35 AM I'm rather worried about my late period. So far it's over a week late, and last month it was a few days off as well. I'm also a bit underweight, and always have been (had my period for 5 years now), so I'm doubting it's lack of body fat that's causing it to be late. I've been under a bit of stress lately too, but I'm not sure if it's enough stress to have thrown my period off. Are there any other reasons that could be causing this? And should I wait it out and see if my period is just coming a couple weeks late, or should I start making an appointment with my doctor right now? -Angie

Twilight Lover =), 6/13/2009 9:16:26 PM hay my mom is a female doctor so i know thiss!!!!!! ok it is ok to wear a tampon in the water (pool or lake not ur bathtub) lol. but no pads. if you are uncomtorbal with tampons,than make sure to ask ur mom or a female relative (who has there period) if you are still uncomtorbal,than i will tell you where to insert the tampon. ok if it is ur first time using a tampon,than sit in front of a body mirror or something to where you can seee "all of that" ok now look and u can see that there is a couple folds of skin down there. look just below the second one and you will see a hole. now put the tampon at an angeled position (like u r sticking it up ur belly button dnt go strait up) and than put it in. dnt b agraid to ask. it will make u feel soooo much better. im happy 2 help anyone who needs it!!!!!!!

This month however when I thought mine was starting it is this strange black discharge instead. It isn't much and not all the time. About 2 - 3 days before i get my period i tent to feel dizzy, like I need to vomit, light headed and very painful cramps so bad I just lying down on the couch in pain. I have tried all over the counter pain relieves panadol, heat pack, hot bath, raspberry tea, hot water bottle it all does not work. I get this for about 2 - 3 days before and it last about 4 days into my period. The day of my period is the worst I cannot leave the couch for hours. What is it and I do not want to tell my mum or a doctor cause I am scared my gp will want to do pelvic exam how scary no thank you. Also I am about 2 weeks after have my period and 2 weeks before having it and have had the same symptoms what is it and what should I do. I no the doctor will help but I am to scared to bring the situation up and do not know how to start the conversation with the doctor once i get myself around booking an appointment and getting there. I have now worked up enough courage to book an appointment with my female doctor but how to i bring up the situation i scared what she will think and what tests she will want to do before she prescribes medication for me. will I need tests or will I just be prescribed medication and does everyone who goes on the pill need a pelvic exam I don’t want one it is quite private and I know I will just tense up and do short quick breathes i do this when i am in an uncomfortable situation or nervous.

Hali, 6/23/2009 12:10:07 AM to Curious. TSS is TOXIC SHOCK SYNDROM. It's what happens when you leave your tampon in for longer then recomended (change every 4-8 hours) or if you use a higher absorbency then needed. It's a bacterial virus. The symptoms of TSS include sudden high fever, a faint feeling, watery diarrhea, headache, and muscle aches. It's not very common but it does happen. Just make sure you change your tampons and always wash your hands. Also it's ok to go swimming while having your period. Technically you don't need to wear a tampon. (a pad is impossible to wear while in water). You're blood doesn't dissolve in the water, infact it doesn't leave your body while you are submerged. Your body actually seals itself off while you are in the water. However it might be a good idea to still wear a tampon cause eventually you'll be getting out of the water and you body is going to open back up. Also it could still leak out if you have heavy periods. And don't worry about getting hot flashes while on your period. I'm 23 and I get them with every period and so does every girl i work with. It's normal.
totally freaked , 6/23/2009 7:28:36 AM On last day of period I still wore a tampon for safety. I pushed it too far up in vaginal that I had difficulty removing. After a week of using UTI over the counter cream it slipt out of my body. The past 3 days I did experiance an ordor. I have abdominal pain and feel tender on lower abdomin. At this time the ordor has subsided but I still feel a bit weak and pain. I am really scared and I tried locating information on webmd.com this can not be normal, please help!

I hadn't worried over it much until I actually counted and realized it was 11 days. My average period lasts five days and is moderate-heavy bleeding. On the third day of this period my bleeding became very light so I thought it was ending earlier than usual, but I have continued lightly bleeding since then. I've never had a period last more than a week. Should I be worried that this period is much longer than most of my others?

Em, 7/8/2009 8:48:18 AM I got off of birth control about 8 months ago, ever since then my periods have been extremely light. I can wear a pad all day and there is only a tiny nickle sized blood spot on it. My blood is no longer red anymore either, it is only the brown blood that comes at the end of your period. I bleed like this for between 5-6 days. I took 3 pregnancy tests and they all came back negative. I am 19 is this normal?

Valanadra, 7/8/2009 9:32:01 PM olivia i think you might want to call your doctor immerson, don't be afraid to use tampons as to how you insert them you should prob. ask your mom but you change your pads every 2 to 4 hours depending on how much you are bleeding it is not weird not wanting to try them i felt very weird trying them the first time but for me i like pads better so i don't use them Samantha yes it could be just that you could be just stressed i know when i get to stressed i don't have them if you are using birth control it could be that to it is probably just stress though just wait a few day or weeks and it might start up again with no problems hope this helps all of you Valanadra.

........., 8/9/2009 5:24:15 PM To Nicole3 I recently started using tampons and suggest trying plastic applicator ones, they are easier to instert than cardboard ones. always remember to read the instructions carefully beforeinstering a tampon, and change it every 4-8 hours! Always use the lowest absorbences that you need for your flow aswell. Hope this helped!

My last period started the twenty-fifth of July and ended six days later. help for cramps, 9/8/2009 7:38:04 PM If you know when you are going to get your period of approximately when, it is helpful to take ibuprofen a day or so before you get your period to relieve cramps. I have been told by doctors that ibuprofen relieves cramps better than tylenol for some people. I know it's made a huge difference for me. Hope that helps!
