Getting your first period is exciting; it means you’re becoming a woman. But you probably have a lot of questions, too. Here are some answers to questions most girls have.

Q. When will I get my first period? A. Most girls get their first period between the ages of 9 and 16. It follows the development of breasts, hips, waist, pubic hair and a growth spurt. As a rule of thumb, most girls weigh at least 100 pounds before beginning menstruation. If you’ve gone through most of those changes, your first period is on its way. Genetics also plays a role. If possible, find out when your mom got her first period to get an estimate of when yours may arrive.

Q. What will happen when I get my first period? A. Usually a first period is very light. It will probably be a few spots of bright red blood or a brown sticky stain that shows up on your underwear. If you are out in public and don’t have a pad with you, don’t worry. Maybe your mother or another adult relative will be close by and can give you one. If not, ask a friend or other woman if she has a pad. Every woman at some time in her life has had to ask another woman for a pad. Yes, it’s embarrassing, but you can rely on other women to see you through this situation. And in all honesty, first periods were designed really well because it is usually so little that it won’t seep through to your outer clothes.

Q. How long will my period last? A. Everyone is different. Your period can last between two and seven days. Most girls have it for about five days.

Q. What should I do when I get my first period? A. In addition to what’s covered above, it’s a good idea to have feminine products ready for that first period, and to know how to use them. Usually a pad is your best bet for the first year or so. Just unwrap it, remove the adhesive cover, place it firmly in your underwear, and you’re all set. Just be sure to change it every four to six hours.

Q. What if I get my first period at school? A. If you have a pad with you, go to the girls’ room and put it on. If you don’t have one, go to the school nurse, the office or wherever you can get a pad. Try keeping a pad at school, just in case. If you don’t need it, maybe one of your friends will and she can return the favor some day soon.

Q. What if my flow is really heavy and I have to use lots of pads? A. It’s probably just a heavy flow, which can happen during a period’s first day or two. Some girls normally experience a heavy flow. If you have a prolonged heavy flow, call your doctor.

Q. Will I have to stop activities such as sports when I have my period? A. No. Believe it or not, the more active you are, the less likely you are to have menstrual cramps. Q. How often will I get my period? A. Menstrual cycles range anywhere between 21 and 45 days. The average is 28 days. At first it will probably be irregular. The number of days between when you get it, the number of days you have it, and the amount of flow will all vary. As your body finds its own internal rhythm, your period will settle into a pattern. It can take a year or two.

Q. Can I go swimming when I have my period? A. Yes, you can go swimming on your period, but don’t wear a pad. It will swell up like an inflatable raft. If you want to swim, wear a tampon. But first, talk it over with your parent or other responsible adult before trying a tampon for the first time, as it may require a little practice.

Q. Can I take a bath when I have my period? A. Yes. In fact, a bath or a shower is really important at this time to keep you clean and to avoid any odors that may occur.

Q. Will getting my period hurt? A. The actual bleeding part doesn’t hurt. The menstrual cramps are uncomfortable but manageable.

Q. What do period cramps feel like? A. You’ve probably already guessed this, but cramps don’t feel very good. They’re uncomfortable, particularly below your belly button and in your lower back. Cramps are caused by the uterus contracting. You can get them just before and during your period. Some girls have a few cramps, some have lots, and then there are those lucky girls who have none. The intensity of menstrual cramps varies, and you may not get them every time you have your period. They can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief medication. Ask your doctor for more information.

Q. What is menstruation, anyway? A. Menstruation is really just the result of your body’s monthly opportunity to create a baby. When your body first becomes able to produce a child, usually between the ages of 9 and 16, it begins preparation once a month for possible motherhood. A tiny egg matures in one of your ovaries, then travels down a fallopian tube toward your uterus. Your uterus, meanwhile, has been preparing for the egg’s arrival, and its lining has thickened. If the arriving egg is fertilized by a sperm, your uterus is all set to protect and nourish the developing baby for the next nine months. If the egg doesn’t get fertilized, your uterus has no use for that thick, spongy lining. So it sheds the lining and flushes it out, along with some blood, body fluids and the disintegrated egg. For two to six days each month, this stuff flows out of your body through your vagina as reddish-brown menstrual flow. After you begin to menstruate, you’ll usually have a menstrual period about every 28 days (except during pregnancy), although your cycle may vary anywhere from 20 to 35 days.

Q. What does it mean if I have an irregular period or late period? A. Irregular periods for the first couple of years are normal. But, after that, when you’ve started to menstruate regularly, missing a period may be a sign of pregnancy (if you are sexually active). Other causes of irregularity include a change in diet, increase in exercise or drug use. The best advice is to chat with your doctor if you’re concerned.

Q. Will other people know I’m having my period? A. When you’re having your period, there’s no reason for the world to know. Regular bathing, proper use of pads and/or tampons, and loose, comfortable clothes are all part of a good strategy.

Q. Why do I feel crabby and sad right before my period? A. Premenstrual syndrome, or PMS, can cause moodiness, anxiety, headaches, backaches, pimples, nausea, cramping, food cravings and, sometimes, depression. Some women experience severe PMS symptoms, while others don’t get them at all.

Q. What are the causes of PMS and why do I feel so bloated? A. PMS symptoms are caused by hormonal changes that take place before menstruation. As hormone levels even out, PMS symptoms gradually disappear. The emotions and problems that seemed overwhelming suddenly feel manageable.

As for feeling bloated, just before and during your period your body tends to retain water. This added fluid might make you feel full and your breasts feel tender. It’s normal to gain a couple of pounds during this time of the month and lose them when your period is over. If you feel like a water balloon, pull on some loose, comfortable clothing. Avoiding salt immediately before and during your period is also a good idea, because salt increases water retention.

Q. What if I bleed through my clothes? A. First, don’t feel bad; it has happened to almost every woman. Tie a sweater or jacket around your waist or untuck your shirt. If that’s not an option, have a good friend walk directly behind you on the way to the bathroom. Find the closest tampon or pad. When you get to the bathroom, check to see if you can blot out any noticeable spots. If it’s a hopeless situation, take a trip to the office and see if someone can bring you a change of clothes from home. If you are at work or out shopping, try to call it a day and head home. Soaking your underwear or other clothes in cold water and using a stain remover can usually get out any bloodstains.

Being proactive can keep this from ever happening again. In the future, stash an extra pair of underwear in your locker and wear dark clothes on days when you’re expecting your period or when your menstrual flow is at its heaviest. Plan on changing your feminine product on a regular basis. Don’t wait until it’s too late because you’re busy. And wear the right product for your flow.

Don't be embarrassed to ask your mom. My mom had told me I could start using tampons at age 16. Where did she come up with this magic number? But the summer I was 14, I told her I wanted to wear shorts and wasn't able to use a pad. So she got me some tampons and they are really easy to use.

Hi im from texas and I find this information really helpful. I have already started my period and I want to try another brand of tampons, but my mom says I have to use the ones she got me first. They are cardboard applicators and I want to try the playtex sport cuz they have plastic applicators. guess ill have to deal with the cardboard ones for now. If you want to try tampons, make sure you go with your mom to buy them. that way you get the right ones.

i haven't started my period yet and everyone else seems to have theres. 1 out of my 2 bff's has their period and i'm to embarresed to ask what it feels like to get your first period, i no i would find that VERY helpful cuz that's what i'm the most nervous about. i'm not nervous about cramps becuz my mom never had cramps except when she had a kidney stone and that didn't have anything to do with periods so i hope generics will kick in.

im fixing to leave for orlando wednesday and my period came late and it started sunday. i dont want my vacation to be ruined. its hard for me to talk to my mom for some reason. i guess its because im an only child. What should i do because we have a 10 hour drive down there. :( :)

Somebody - Don't be afraid to tell your mom!!! She is your best advocate right now and has probably gone through very similar circumstances. I'm an only child too, and sometimes it is hard to talk to your mom because the focus is always on you and you don't want to seem like a failure or something. But tell her what is going on so she can help you get set up for the trip and you will be able to have a good time.

I have a comment on the question "What does it mean if I have an irregular period or late period?" The answer failed to mention that irregular or absent periods can also be a sign of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a metabolic syndrome that affects 6-10% of all women and is a leading cause of infertility (inability to get pregnant). It is characterized by irregular or absent periods, excessive facial and body hair growth, acne, weight gain, and insulin resistance. If you have developed physically but don't start menstruating regularly by age 16, you should see a doctor. Luckily, I was diagnosed at that age thanks to my concerned mom. I get my periods once in 2 months , from by first periods , I consultanted the doctor advised me to do pelvic scan and suggested me to take the tablet deviry every month, but now am married and not taking the tablet, I and my husband planned not to have baby now, but we have safe sex , even now my periods are irregular some time , so am worried that is there any problems to have baby. can u please suggest me.

The best thing to do is to tell your mom, because it is good to be honest, and she probably wants to know that you got your period. So when I first got mine when I was 11, I was really scared, and my hand started shaking really bad, and it was right before school started too, and I just went and told her and she was all cool about it, so I say just tell her

dont make a big deal about using a tampon the first time there are instructions and it will take practice. My periods suck i have really bad PMS. I also start my period about 2 times a month and it last both times for 3-6 days

I started when I was 12 or 13 and we were on vacation. I had no idea what was going on and it really did scare me. I didn't have cramps for about the first year. I used the pads regularly and what they say about your friends asking you for a pad is true...it has happened to me several times at school. I would keep a pad in your purse or locker at all times just in case. As far as tampons go, I love them! I am a very sporty person and tampons help me play as much as I want and not worry about bleeding through or having to mess with the pads during practice or a game. A lot of my friends don't know a whole lot about a tampon and they think that tampons are painful...just read the directions and practice a few times, there isn't any discomfort if you follow the directions. Talk to your mom though, she's been through all of this and she can help you pick out the right pads and tampons for you. And trust me, she understands your worries and pains more than you think.

Well honey, your having what most people call discharge. It is sometimes a brownish color and sometimes its more of a yellowish white color. I would suggest that you wear a paniteliner. You don't have to wear one of those thick uncomfortable pads just for discharge. Most women have discharge either before or after their periods. If your worried about telling your mom, don't worry about it. I learned pretty much all I know from my mom. As for everyone else knowing about it, well, to be honest there's pretty much no avoiding it. They will find out one way or another so when they do just blow it off as if it is no big deal and they won't think its a big deal either.

I just got my (first) period on July 1st this year. Now it's August 13th and I didn't get it a second time yet. The first time was REALLY heavy and now I'm just waiting for it to come along... I can't really help it and I'm worried that it might come on surprise, which is the last thing I need. I have been carrying around pads just in case but I'm still scared. I told my mom and all and she's cool with it. One of my friends got it on the same day and she said to me that you don't get it for 2 months after the first one. I'm not really sure if that's true but can someone give me an answer? My first day of 8th Grade is September 3rd and I have a TERRIBLE feeling that it'll hit me like a bomb on that day. Wonderful. So while all the teachers are explaining 8th Grade stuff, i'll be in the bathroom changing my pad every 5 seconds. All of my friends got theirs over the past year and I was the last one. This site was soooo helpful cause I just got mine and I was really worried. If you don't get your underwear to cold water real soon and the stain dries, wash them in lemon juice and apple cider vinigar and it will help get the stain out.

Not the first bit of information I would look up, however, for guys (aka: me) can became a bit more educated about delicate information like this. Knowing more can help us be there for our friends, girlfriends, etc. insted of fearing PMS or one is complaining for no reason.

Okay Melanie, don't worry. It could be your period, but most likely it's just discharge. I get major discharge after my period, and I guess for you it's not uncommon to get discharge before. Just wear pads or some pantyliners to keep from staining your underwear.

I havent started my period, and I am nervous about using tampons... what is the easiest way to put them in, or are there any tips, and is it bad to practice putting in a tampon before you start your period?

Yes you can use tampons when swimming, infact they are reliable! :]

You can go number one and number two without having to take your tampon out!

You cramp because your body is working its magic and cleaning you out! Yeah it hurts but theres always midol [ps ladies this really helps]

Talking to your mother is the best thing you can do, Dont be scared to talk with her, she has been through the exact same things that you are going through right now.

Dont be too eager to start your period, you will start when you start :] its not something you can rush and its not something you can post pone either!

Applying heat to your stomach [like a heating pad] helps when your cramping really bad. :]

Asprin works, but not for ALL the symptoms of PMS the same with ibprophen... The two things that i have found that work on ALL the symptoms of PMS and your period are Pamprin and Midol :]

IF you are having sex, make sure you are protecting yourselfs! you can get pregnant anytime even ON your period! so make sure you are always using protection! [im not suggesting you have sex but im saying if you do it then be safe!]

A lot of things about your body change around this time, it might be scarey but its NORMAL!

I had my first period when I was 10 years old , my mother was 13. It stopped when she in her 50's. I am now 42,will mine stop in 10 more years or so? My husband and I already have 2 healthy young adult children and 2 beautiful grand children. I WANT IT TO STOP NOW!!!

I agree that having your period is definitely unpleasant. I've had mine for more than four years now and I still don't like it, but I've learned to just deal with it. Sometimes I get really bad cramps where I can't even get out of bed, but when I talked to my mom and my sister I found out they had really bad ones too and they shared ways to feel better. It is so important to talk to someone like your mom when you get your period. Their advice is really helpful and it may be awkward, but trust me in the end you'll be glad you did. Also, when I first got my period it happened in July and I didn't get it again until October so don't worry if they're really irregular at first.

any ways although i have not get my first period i got a little advice for you. instead of carrying pads around, you wear one just in case. but you can still carry about two to school and a underwear.

I have mine and I'm not fighting with people over who has the worst symptoms. I have never gottenone cramp and I've had my period since July this year. i've had cramps since i started my period (nine years ago) and i've found that the best way to get rid of cramps is to stay active. i know when you start your period you might not feel like doing much but if you exercise, just go for a walk or something, your cramps should ease up some...it won't make them go away completely. if that doesn't work ask your doctor about a pain reliever.

ok heres a tip, if you ever happen to get your period during class, carry your purse or bag up to the teacher and ask if you can go to the bathroom. Make sure they notice your bag and automatically they will tell you to go because they know better than anyone whats going on. I hope this helps! (:

bella-do you drink a loot of fluids every day and u might just be absorbing a lot of water if this goes on much longer talk to one of your parents about. and when your discharge gets really heavy and u way over 100 pounds get a growth spurt then u might get ur period soon that is what happened to me and the discharge went on 4 like a year it went on and off dont worry

Hi...i'm the late bloomer....I'm 15 and just started...don't worry about it....It sux worse than anything else but you get over it...here's how things happened for me...at 12 I started developing....after about 4 months I started getting white discharge which i found if u use a pantiliner will keep it good... then 6-8 months later the white started to turn brown which lasted for about 2 months about every other week...then about 6 months after that my period started twi days ago....It startled me how much blood there was i felt nauseus and fatigued but im getting used to it...its hard to sleep b cuz u have to go to the bathroom more often andit feels like u pee ur pants...hope this helped...GOOD LUCK!

jordan- you can have white discharge for 2 years so i wouldnt expect it but it could be...plus cramps can happen any time from exercise or eating so even if you have cramps it may not be because your gonna start your period

Hey guys (oops, girls)! I'm sweet sixteen, turn seventeen in one month, and am livin' my life to the fullest! And guess what? I just started my FIRST period a couple days ago. All through middle school and my first two years of high school, I thought something was wrong with me. I never told my mom. Then the other day, I was over at the hospital for my nursing class (I love it, and I almost have my CNA!) I felt my period come. At first I was excited. Now it's just annoying and I wish it would leave. I guess in a way I was lucky. I got more years of freedom from pads, tampons, and PMS. So all you girls out there who probably are feeling like I did, don't worry. I'm completely normal, and I'm also almost seventeen!

Wow- My little Angel jsut started her period yesterday...she just turned 10! I was shocked that this happened so early. But, at the same time I was so happy that she came to me right away and asked for help. She was very scared and I remained very calm and did my best to help her- I am not gonna lie she cryed and was very confused and embarrassed, but I told her that there was nothing to be embarassed about and help her through all the confusion and made a few jokes along the way. I went out and bought her liners, pads and whipes... and ALOT of chocolate and a cute new comfy outfit. Today she woke up like a champ and said she feels much better about everything. So to all the MOMs the best advise I can give you is Stay CALM , give lots of hugs and just let her know it will all be ok and its just a normal part of being a lady. To all you DAUGHTERS- please please dont be affraid to tell your mom- trust me we want to know and we want to help you ;) good luck to all of you

if ur getting worried that ur friends have all started their periods before u. don't worry :) . i started my periods a couple of week after i turned 15(i turned 15 on the 2nd august). i am now on my second period, thats 5 months after my first one. so keep ur chin up, some girls r different from others. by the way, i'm a bit scared to have a bath during my periods. i take ages to dry myself and i'm worried that my periods will carry on before i get my pad on. also do u think that pads r better or tapons? i'm using pads at the moment but i don't know if it would be better to use tampons or not. Hey Girls, Im 30 yrs old, and know excatly where you are coming from. My Period started when I was 13., and was like clockwork since then. I can def be a pain most of the time, and when you deal with it for years.. you cant wait til its gone..lol.. Just relax and let it go naturally., its the only way. Dont get upset if everyone you know is different then you.. cuz, there is no two people that are alike, and everyone has different outlooks on dealing with the "change". The white stuff that comes out before you have your period is called a vaginal discharge. I don't exactly know what it means, but I think it cleans out your...um... thing before you have your period. It's a milky white sticky thing that stays in your underwear until you wash it out. Since I haven't HAD my period yet, I sometimes think I had it because I usually get a heavy flow of vaginal discharge. That means that I am SUPER close to having my period. I'll tell you guys when I DO have it! I'm sort of excited, yet at the same time, I'm scared.

this website helps a lot about knowing what to do when you get your first period!! if you havent started and your in 8th grade or high school, but all of your friends have, dont worry thats what happened to me. i use to feel like something was wrong w/ me because all of friends got theirs except for me. but i have just started like 3 months ago, so dont worry, every girl has a different timeline! oh, and its completely normal for your period to go away for like the first few months during your first year. if ur getting that brownish whitish discharge it means your period is on its way, it means that the lining of your vigina is thickining and it will come during 4-7 months

hey erin just to answer ur question.... im 14 years old and i started my period when i was 12.. i got mine on Christmas eve.. fun huh? anyway, i didn't get my second period until a couple weeks after when it was supposed to come back.. its totally normal and i would just carry around a pad just in case it sneaks up on you.. u should be fine but just be patient and trust me it will come :) and to all those who dont wanna tell their moms, i didn't tell my mom for the 1st 2 months of my period but my dog got into the trashcan and ripped up my pads all over the floor.. i guess my mom found them and asked me if i started.. it was the most awkward moment of my life so i would tell her before she finds out.. its better. thanks KOTEX :)

I use tampons because i had a heavy discharge and today when i got home from school i took it out to change it and i saw some brownish redish blood and i thought i got my period and i did and this helped me alot thank you so much for the tips!

I have the sorest cramps ever, its like someone is stabbing me like i swear and i hate when im in class ans a get a shooting pain im just tryin goy keep a straght face while gabbing the table haha. It soo sore though. But i get the worst pains out of all my friends sure some of the girls get like 1 pain and she gets her peroid then shes perfect. Im having them cramps right now. I took today off because it that is a handy thing about them :D Dont worry if you havent got your peroid keep like 2 pads on ya at all times like in yours school bag or locker or wherever like. Be happy if ya dont have it yet because its not good or anything its juts something ya gotta live with..

I'm 18 now but I was 9 my 1st period it was me and my dad at home because my mom died when I was 8 an my sissy lived with us but she was in GA. So I had to tell my dad my 1st period he did not now what to do so he called his girlfriend an tell us what to do on the phone. Hi guys I have had white/ yellow stuff in my indies and now from reading these comments I know I am not alone. I have not had my periods yet I am kinda nervous . some people at it hurt the tampons hurt do u have to use tampons or can u just use pads??

you dont have to use tampons u can just use pads but when you first start using tampons if you dont put them in right it might hurt but it shouldnt so i guess its up to u wether or not u use tampons

i don't really understand why it's so hard to tell your mom...it's not like your the only girl in the world going through this a little less dramatic. And some helpful advice maybe you don't have to tell you mom right away just a trusted adult and I'm sure they'll help you out with letting your mother know. This site is really great information.

I haven't had my period, but how long do I have this discharge before I start it. I have had the yellow kind for the last two weeks, but I am pretty sure the white stuff has been around longer, I just haven't noticed. Most people said I will have this discharege before my period for 6-12 months. Is this true, can I get it sooner. The other day I noticed once in a while brown discharge (or at least I think it's discharge). Could you answer my question thanks!

Jessica- If they don't ask you I would just not worry about it, and if they do just tell them well I haven't gotten mine yet. If they make fun of you, which idk y they would, just remember you r also lucky you don't have cramps yet and you don't have to worry about swimming or other things.

Clo and Holly- Ok one it's not illegal to have sex younger than 18, otherwise there wouldn't be teen pregnancies, but i think you should talk to your parents about this or a trusted adult they will talk to you about the value of not having sex to young. Also to the people with all the discharge go see a doctor not a website you could have a serious infection like a yeast infection and you should have it checked by your doctor, just to be on the safe side.

i've been wondering this for ages, how can u hav a shower/bath during ur period? i take a while to dry myself and i won't get my pad back on in time. a few weeks ago i was at the very end of my period so i had a shower but as i was in there i started bleeding and so when i got out the shower i had to hold some toilet paper there while i quickly dried myself off and put my pad on! a soon as i was dry, the bleeding stopped, so next time i'm on my period, i'm going to be too scared to hav a shower/bath, even though my mum says i should wash down there regularly while on my period. what should i do??? by the way for those people who want their period, just be glad that u don't hav it yet because it really is a pain (literally!). i'm 15 1/2 and i've only had 3 periods. my first 2 were 5 months apart! so don't worry if urs takes a while before it starts again.

Hi Everyone,

Sophie I saw your post and can totally relate! My period is really heavy. I have 2 suggestions. First, if you are comfortable using tampons use one. You can leave it in while you shower or put it in as soon as you get out. If you're putting it in after, it may be a little harder to insert because of how our bodies absorb some water, so try putting a little KY Jelly (or any generic lubricant, I was surprized to see that the bottle said it was to help with tampon insertion. Just put a little on the applicator.

Another idea is to alter how you dry off. Dry enough so you can get your pad and panties on first, then do the rest. To save time, put the pad on your panties before you shower. If you're worried about blood on the towel, try patting dry with a paper towel. It won't fall apart like toilet paper. You could even use a spare pad.

Monica, I'd have a talk with your mom and a doctor. It might just be your body adjusting to hormones. A doctor can help determine what is going on. Listen to your body, if you're feelinf something different that usual, that means something different is going on. Relax though, ther more you can explain it to your mom and doctor the better.

Nima, I saw your post too and remembered that a friend of mine didn't get her period until she was 17. She is likely in the normal range. Consider her build, like when did she start to wear a bra, ect. Those are signs that hormones are kicking in. If you're worried, talk to your doctor. From what I know I think she's in normal range.

Ok, one more...I'm bored and feel like "talking':
Just Wondering: I'll give my best answer since it can be hard to explain. For me it feels like the muscles are really tight in my lower abs. I can tell it's not the muscles because the cramping comes from deeper inside. The uterus is a muscle, so it's contracting, just like if you do sit ups to work your abs. Other times it can feel like when you need to have a bowel movement. You feel that pain/cramping just in the location of the uterus instead. There is something that helps me with the cramps. There are nerve endings in your ankles that corespond to your uterus. Right in the inside of your ankle under the bone you'll likely feel a tender spot when you have your period. (a massage therapist showed me this and for me it works to help with some cramps) Gently massage that spot. It can relax your muscles. Also you're not focused on the pain, you're focused on the relief of pain in your ankle. Like a mini pedi! Don't forget to do both ankles!

hi Emme, thanks for the advice. i've never tried using a tampon before but i want to try. i don't know how to ask my mum cos she uses pads and both my older sisters use pads so i may aswell stick with the trend. i think it was because it was the first time i'd showered while on my period, cos on my 2 previous periods i was too scared to shower so i waited til it had completely finished. i'll try again and see what happens. thanks again!

looks like you have started your period!The discharge is a sign that your period is coming soon,and if you have seen red and brown stains than you have definetly started.But you can never be to sure,if you start to frequently see blood in your underpants or on your panti-liner,it may get more heavy,when it does,start using actual pads.You were smart to get up and get a panti-liner when your cramps were heavy...you may wonder how i know all this,my aunt is a female doctor so she knows about all that stuff.Good luck Carlie! -Krissi

im 13 and a half, average weight/height and im going through all the normal *changes* and im about due to get my first period
ive had white discharge for almost 2 and a half years, and on saturday i had this brown discharge lookingish stuff instead. it lasted all day saturday, all day sunday and (todays monday) a little less today on sunday i saw a few spots of red (only really really tiny cos i was on alert) and nothing else red since. i told mum on sunday and she sed congrats it will probably turn red soon thats most likely ur period but it hasnt yet and im really wondering wat it is...
ive been headachey and a bit teary, pretty moody (sorry mum!) and im about the same age my mum was when she got hers

That sounds about right! Your on your period! That brown stuff is actually blood, it is when it mixes with air, it turns brown.

hey..you posted a comment on 4/4/09 at 1:47:52 pm. if you had a big brown blob of discharge it means this is your period. Your period does not always have to be bright red during the first year. the modiness means that you were on your period...and your not getting the discharge a couple of days had after (brown) because your period ended already. My first period was a brown discharge....so all those girls saying what it is...it is your first period (or one of the firsts)and it dosent always have to be bright red since its your first one. but remember krissi, its not normal to have this discharge with a lot of odor because this could mean its a yeast infection...but since youve had headaches and been moody then yeah its your period, i wouldnt worry too much about it! :)

first.......ppl r afraid 2 ask their mom about stuff.its ok!!!she was like you once and had 2 ask her mom.she has been there,and you should trust her cuz she has more experience and will b happy 2 help!!!!trust me dont be afraid 2 tell ur mom or a female in ur family cuz ur not the only girl in the world who has it.
second....ppl r worried that when they get their first period in the public that it will leak through their clothes and stain there pants.....that is totaly not true...just chill!!!when u get ur first period,its just a little stain,not a flood-of-blood!!!it will only be alittle bit of blood,nothing bad enough 2 go through ur clothes!!!
and third.......ppl r worried about discharge....discharge is a sign that ur public area is cleaning itself and its also a sign that ur period is coming soon,and i am just gonna give u all the symtoms of a period lissten well....
bloating (gas)
cramps (pain in ur lower stomach)
you have to weigh over 100 pounds
white or yellow discharge
public hair
it will ussually come 1-2 years after boobs have started developing
little red or brown stains(you may see brown because brown is dryed blood)
change in moods
mood swings
and a tip-its good to use pads when u first start
i hope i answered most of ur questions but remember nothing is better than talking 2 ur mom or aunt or someone cuz they have been there....for a while.

alright,well,if u read my response up there,you will noticed that i said that u ussually get ur period if u r over 100 pounds...but weighing over 100 pounds duz not mean that u are fat....it means u are DEVELOPING!!but if ur mom got it at 15,than u are most likely 2 get it AROUND that age,but genetics is not always the correct way to tell....but my mom is a female doctor and i know alot about it......so my good guess is u will get ur period in about 1-2 years if ur 13....and im positive about that answer!!!but if you have all the rest of the symtoms,than ur period will come probably in a year or two...or anytime in between...but watch out,depending on how ur body adapts 2 hormones,it could very well come sooner!!!

Dear Twilight Lover, i'm too scared to hav a bath/shower during my period. last time i was on my period i had a shower near the end of my period and i'd only been bleeding a little bit. when i was in the shower i was washing down there and i noticed blood, it kept on coming, lightly but frequently, and when i had finished i had to hold some toilet paper there until i got a pad on. do u hav any advice? btw i'm 15 and i'veonly had my period 3 times since i started in August so if anybody's worried that their period is taking a long time to come, don't worry. i'm normal and i had a 5 month gap between my 1st and 2nd period! if u can help Twilight Lover then i will greatly appreciate it!

Okay, this sounds gross.

But, last night I found a brown stain in my underwear, at first I thought I may have not wiped all the way, but it was like GROSS and STICKY brown stuff. I let it go, and then today I went to the bathroom at school, and I noticed a bigger stain - different underwear. I started to panic, but I just let it go. I just got home and have been getting uncomfortable feelings, I went to the bathroom and the stain has gotten ever bigger! But when I pee, nothing happens. Then, I saw blood on the toilet paper, but, I still don't know!

ConfusedCassie- yes, that probably was your period. the reason why it wasn't on the toilet paper is because you cant force blood out, or hold it in. it drips on its own accord. put on a pad, just in case.

To Jessica, hav u tried using pads with wings? they r kind of like tabs that r attached to the pad and stick underneath ur underwear to stop the pad moving about, then u don't get blood on ur underwear. if u look in the shops u can easily get pads with wings

i know wat tha problm is.wat is happenin is wen ur nervous thins happen mor quicker so u dont no wen they'll start.so every day wen u get home frm high school and before high school do a relaxation excersise:lie or sit down,stretch oyu legs out and hold your breath for 5 seconds,then hold for 5 seconds,then breath out for 3 seconds,then hold for three seconds.after doing this for a week u shoould start 2 feel your period coming.i hope i helped!

Since you just had your first period...you are still irregular meaning your period may not come on the same time every month. Being irregular can last up to 2 years after you first get your period! Sooo dont worry about it unless there is a chance you might be pregnant! Hope this helped :)

i got my first period last month. i was freaked out cause i didnt know what to do. my sister is 12 and she got hers when she was 11 and im 13. all my friends started before me :( but now im in the group. When i first started it was brown for a few days. then it got to red.


SO if its for first time or if u are learning about it remember that it will be brown for a few days. then it'll turn red. and remember to tell your mom and ask other friends and family for advice

dear lesley, it is not a big deal if you dont start your period some girls dont get it tell they are 20.of course you might just be to tense you need to relax read a book before you go to bed your body needs to relax before you it can do anything, and dont worry about talking about it with your mom it is not that bad. just think of it as your mom had to talk to her mom about it and if she could do it then you can do it and if you dont want to your could always talk to your doctor or the school nurse about it. or even ask your sisters they know about that kinda stuff and it is not as bad as talking to your mom about it, your sisters wont tell they probably know how you feel....

well,you are only sussposed to keep the tampon in for under 8 hours,so it is most likely u wont have to go (#1) but if you do than just easily m0ve the little string over to the side!but if you r still not comftorbal with that,than just remove the tampon.its easy.hope i helped!!!!!!

I got my period yesterday mom knows and everything. Its not super light, but its not heavy at all. The thing is, is that its brown and not red at all. There is also little spots that are darker and are like wet blood clots on my pad and when i wipe (also brown). Is this normal? When will it turn red?

At first, i was scared to buy tampons and pads with my dad and sister, i live with them and we all go shopping together, but then i realized that every girl goes through their period so dont be uncomfertable about it. they are items that you need! so take this advice and just buy them. if you still feel akward, ask for some money to go to the store or something.

We don't lose our virginity when we use tampons so Lia should be able to use them.
If you want help inserting a tampon, I think you should go to beinggirl.com. It's really helpful for that kind of stuff. But make sure you try them on a light day so you can try a lighter absorbancy until you get used to tampons.

Caroline, explain to your foster mom that you want to keep this between only her and you. Don't be uncomfortable using tampons, just ask if you she can buy you some pads. You can use toilet paper bunched up in your underwear for a really short period of time, but that is not going to hold forever. I also heard from anther site you can use a sock,,,, but idk if you should ruin your sock. Just have some courage, and if you talk with her, I'm sure she will understand. Trust me, I know what it is like to be embarrassed. I was on a school field trip w/ 102 people on the trip and I started, and I had a REALLY heavy flow. I was wearing YELLOW shorts, and it soaked through. I was lucky I caught it in time. I draped by jacket over my waist, and I told my mom and there was not ANYTHING that we could buy. So, my mom had to ask my teacher for one, and I got 2 maxi's. I learned from then on to stock up as much as I can in the bathroom vending machine's and to ALWAYS be prepared on a vacation. :-) I really hope this helps.

Since you just got your period in february, your period is still irregular so not having it is nothing to worry about and is normal for the first year to year and a half. After that yuor period should be regular and come at near the smae time every month!

hi im in a bit of a problem i got my first period on March 13 and that lasted 3 days i got my next period on April 11 and that lasted 4 days then i got it on May 5 and that lasted 4 days then i got it on june 12-16 which is 5 days and i also got it on july 12-15 which is 4 days im leaving on vacation in a week and im not sure when im going to get my next one and im freaking out because what if i get it and im in the pool of something can you please help me figure out when i might get me next one and QUICKLY!!!

i think im really lucky because yesterday i went swimming and about 3 hours later i started my period. lol it would of been bad if i started it while i was swimming! i wasnt expecting it at all! because the last on i had was in april and it never came again for awile so i forgot about it. But it started about two months late. But thats normal i think because ive only had my periods since january 09. Anyway its kind of funny it happend all the sudden, but not when i didnt want it to!

Sorry i couldnt respond faster! But girls usually grow for another year and a half to 2 years after they get there period. Sooo if your parents are tall (over 6 feet) then i would say you are headed in the same direction!

Wow...okay. Since your periods are still irregular its hard to predict when you will get your period although from what you said, you get "it" around the same time each month, and for about the same time. Since you had it from the 12-15 and your period last 3-4 days (as you described) It will most likely be gone by the time of your vacation :)!

i am just saying,if i were you,i would use tampons.i know alot of people say you should wear pads the first few times.but i wore a tampon on my first period.you know how?before i started my period,i learned how!i learned online.it was easy.i also practiced by sticking a Q-tip up my (va) (gin) (a) and it worked.i learned how before i even got my period.and i only use tampons! (except for at night cuz i sleep in alot ;D) so i encourage you girls,when you get your first period,try to use tampons AND pads,and see wich ones you like best!

ok the bown and red spotting is blood,and it most likely is your first period.but,if that is your first time seeing spotting,than you may not get it again for a while.maybe 2 or 3 months.i remember on my first period i didnt have it again until 4 months later.but i got it! and if you see spotting again,put a pad on just in case.hope i helped!

It is perfectly normal. First starting out your period, won't nessecarily mean it has to come again that exact day on the next month. Give it time to come every month regulary. Which may take awhile for some people. So don't worry.

I got my period when i was in school last year. I was really nervous because i was kind of embarassed to talk to our school nurse. She's a really nice lady and I trust her but it was to wierd because i didn't know her that well. So anyways, i wear pads when i am at school, but when i go to gym or swimming i wear a tampon. dont listen to any of the rumors you hear saying that a tampon hurts because it doesnt. you just have to get used to putting it in correctly, thats all. i hope this helps!

thanks girls i haven't checked back in a while, so i'm sorry for the late reply.
i got the real thing at 12 -- it was a heavy flow too :/ then months later i got it a second time and since then it hasn't returned.
i know the age you're meant to get your period is 8-16 but i'm worried my cycle isnt normal because i haven't got a period for 2 years! and i cant find symptoms of it coming :S
is there anything i can do to make it come back? lol i probably sound strange for wanting it :P

ok i have been reading ALL of the comments and i wanna point out some things that i found wrong....
first.......ppl r afraid 2 ask their mom about stuff.its ok!!!she was like you once and had 2 ask her mom.she has been there,and you should trust her cuz she has more experience and will b happy 2 help!!!!trust me dont be afraid 2 tell ur mom or a female in ur family cuz ur not the only girl in the world who has it.
second....ppl r worried that when they get their first period in the public that it will leak through their clothes and stain there pants.....that is totaly not true...just chill!!!when u get ur first period,its just a little stain,not a flood-of-blood!!!it will only be alittle bit of blood,nothing bad enough 2 go through ur clothes!!!
and third.......ppl r worried about discharge....discharge is a sign that ur public area is cleaning itself and its also a sign that ur period is coming soon,and i am just gonna give u all the symtoms of a period lissten well....
bloating (gas)
cramps (pain in ur lower stomach)
you have to weigh over 100 pounds
white or yellow discharge
public hair
it will ussually come 1-2 years after boobs have started developing
little red or brown stains(you may see brown because brown is dryed blood)
change in moods
mood swings
and a tip-its good to use pads when u first start
i hope i answered most of ur questions but remember nothing is better than talking 2 ur mom or aunt or someone cuz they have been there....for a while.

it's good to know i'm not the only one. i also had the 3 doses of cervical cancer vaccine and i'm wondering if that could play a part to stopping my period?

my mum says she got it around the age i am now, so i guess i have a few months left?? i really hope it comes lol, and once again i'm glad i'm not alone =] it would be devastating to find out i cant have kids one day because of this really irregular period D:

yes, heavier discharge is a sign of your period! But if your vagina itchy? Thats a sign of a yeast infection. Ask your mom! She knows best :)

Hey Girls. I have been getting tons of dishcharge, mostly to the point where i feel like i peed myself. I am 14, 5'4", pubic hair down there and underarms. ?? My hair recently got really greasy and my underarms won't stop sweating in school! I am starting to break out alot.

For the discharge, i tried a panty liner but it made me feel really uncomfortable and i think it made it smell worse. It makes me feel like the wetness is closer and more uncomfortable when i put one on.

In the mornings and middle of the day it is worst. My underwear are practically soaked. When i go to the bathroom, sometimes a glob of discharge falls out. ( i know it sounds gross) but is it normal? I think it just gets stuck because of my underwear. IDK.

Please help. Tell me if it is going to come soon. I actually am looking forward to it. You may say thats ridiculous but its my opinion. :) THANKS
