The Facts About PMS

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a catch-all name for a variety of symptoms many women experience a few days before or during their period. Moodiness, depression, bloating, skin break-outs, soreness or feelings of heaviness in your breasts are all symptoms of PMS.

Unfortunately, nothing has been proved to “cure” PMS. However, a few things can alleviate some or all symptoms. Below are a few suggestions. Consider keeping a journal of remedies you’ve tried, to determine which ones work well for you and which ones don’t.

  • Pay attention
Being aware of your body will help you predict how PMS will affect you each month and help you manage your symptoms. If you know you’re emotional a few days before your period, make a mental note to stay relaxed and not take something like an argument too seriously. If you know you have bad cramps on the first day of your cycle, try to keep your activities light that day. A slight change in your diet or sleeping habits might be what you need to make it through this time of the month a little easier.
  • Eat right
Good nutrition is essential to controlling PMS. It affects your energy level and the severity of your symptoms. Watch your salt intake before your period. Salt causes water retention, which can make you feel bloated and heavy. Some women find that avoiding caffeine and alcohol helps prevent cramps and headaches. In addition, herbal teas can be helpful in cramp prevention, raspberry-leaf tea in particular. Some health food stores even carry special “PMS tea.” Finally, be sure to get enough calcium. Drink milk and eat low-fat frozen yogurt; there’s evidence they reduce cramps.
  • Relax
When you have bad cramps, lie down with a heating pad. Read a good book, watch TV, snuggle with a pet. Breathing deeply and relaxing are terrific pain-relievers. And try to keep your stress level at a minimum.
  • Take vitamins
If you’re not getting enough nutrition through food alone, ask your doctor about taking a vitamin or mineral supplement containing iron, vitamin C and vitamin B. During your period, you lose some of these nutrients, and replenishing them may relieve some of your PMS symptoms.
  • Try massage
To relieve cramps, gently massage and rub your stomach. To relieve back pain, ask someone for a gentle backrub, concentrating on your lower back.
  • Other suggestions
Over-the-counter pain relief, like aspirin and ibuprofen, can relieve cramps. Stretching during cramps and getting more vigorous exercise throughout the month help both cramps and bloating. Sleep is also important; staying refreshed makes symptoms seem less of a problem. If your PMS, cramps and bleeding are severe, ask your doctor about other options.

what if you have cramps in school?

chelsea, 6/16/2008 3:19:02 PM
I dont get cramps at school often but when i do i usually try to hunch over a little to try and warm up the area or if you have a spare minute just take your hands and hold them over the effected area it helps if you have a desk that can hide your hands so people will not bug you about it if none of this works you can always take medication at lunch or when you are switching classes hope this helps

Ashley, 6/23/2008 10:20:23 AM
I am a LN and what really helps with cramps is taking asprin the day before you think your going to get it and the morning of. Dont drink energy drinks or coffee, it just irratates your blood flow. Orgasms also relieve you because its loosining up the tightning that you have. Any questions you can email me at loveenchaos@aim.com

why do cramps hurt so bad ?

Kinley, 7/7/2008 6:16:05 PM
I haven't started my period yet, and I'm really worried... does anyone have any suggestions that would help me? But I've been having signs of starting it! S.O.S.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mallory, 7/8/2008 10:53:14 PM
I havent started but I do sometimes get cramps and the other day I cried over nothing and my Mom's exact words were " You are so PMSing on me." Yah crazy right but my mom also says my time is coming soon hope so cross your fingers!

Anne, 7/12/2008 6:28:38 PM
Taking a multivitamin definitely helps. I got out of the habit of taking one every night and started getting nasty PMS. Now, I take a women's multivitamin again and the moodiness and cramps aren't as severe and don't start as early.

Annya , 7/17/2008 7:27:16 AM
I think Medicine really helps even thought i dont like taking medicine. I know the heating pad works as well, you know i was thinking when i have a baby i might have it in water. When you are on your period and you fill the Bath Tub up with nice water with some relaxing lavender beeds it really makes the pain goway. The heat really helps me so much so remember when your on your P fill the Tub and take a bath, it will surely make you feel better.
My Mother used to tell me to say off the following foods: Ginger, Fish and things that are spicy cause it doesnt help the cramps, I am a witness.
Thank you for reading.

Nichole, 7/18/2008 9:38:52 AM
I was always told not to have caffene or anything cold, that it would make it worse, I see the caffene part is true, I don't know where they got the cold part. Orange juice and things with potassium help craps

liane, 7/20/2008 9:25:36 PM
Believe it or not, crunches help. It takes your mind off the pain while helping to make your body look awesome, and exercise releases endorphines which will help your mood. Also, a nice big glass of chocolate milk! The chocolate hits the spot and the vitamins in the milk help cramps too.

mabel, 7/21/2008 10:30:28 PM
wow you guys have great tips-

i have a question- isnt taking aspiring during your period bad since aspirin makes your blood thinner?- so woulnd it make you bleed more? or something .

i like falling asleep- yep i go off to dream land after my wamr bath my ibuprofen and some wamr milk and wehn i wake up its gone :) but once uh i gotit at school and i seriously though i was going to trow up or pass out i went to the nurse and she gave me like 6 pills of something- they worked after 10 minutes or so.... but do you guys have any ideas for when i get bad cramps AFTER lunch - when the nurse goes off. i mean i dont get cramps EVERY period so i cat predict when to take pills or when its going to start to hurt... so yeah any ideas as to how you guys deal with it?

sorry if is long:)

Katherine, 7/24/2008 1:31:47 AM
Ibuprophen is good for cramps, but when you are a college student it is hard to sit through classes with that uncomfortable feeling! I buy the ThermaCare HeatWraps. I use the wraps for the neck, because they cover your entire lower stomach, and they are completely subtle under jeans. Best of all they last for 12 hours!

Liz, 7/27/2008 5:10:37 PM
Thank you for this "The Facts About PMS" In a couple of weeks I will be turning 42 and I have become emotional and moody more than a few years ago. I have to hold the tears back when I'm in public(even at work) and hope nobody can see me do this. This is hard to do, especially when I'm around other male workers. But your facts help me, my mother has been dead for 18 years, so I can't even talk to her or even my stepmother. When my period is over I want to apologize for the things I have said, at times.

Sharon, 7/29/2008 7:22:40 PM
when I take medication i have too watch, because i have epilepsy and are there risks in taking asprin and tylenol.?
also if i do i find that i bleed more

Emily, 7/30/2008 1:08:00 PM
Im moody, im breaking out, I have cravings, Im tried, I have migranes, and tender breasts. Will i get my period soon? (i had 3 already) What are other symptoms?

Micaela, 8/8/2008 9:19:44 PM
Emily,
Here are some symptoms of your period coming:
You get moody or irritated alot easier than usual.
You will get cravings, but you need to control them. Most of the time thats why you get cramps!!
Your breasts tend to get even more tender around your period, and trust me, when mine get tender it hurts soo.. bad!!
You might feel bloated.
You might get headaches, where you where saying migraines, I am right there with you! The third, fourth and fifth periods that I had, I got migraines and I couldnt consentrate on anything. Worst part is, they happened in school, and you arent allowed to put your head down!! :(
Anyway, you might start soon, so my suggestions are, bring a purse with little pockets either on the inside or outside of the purse, and put pantiliners or pads, just in case. Or, just stuff some in your backpack.

Best of Wishes, Micaela

Sunshine, 10/12/2008 7:59:01 PM
Hi, I have a question for any one who can help! I am almost 30, and I had to have 75% of my thyroid removed in December. Since then my P has been horrible, I thought it was bad before, BUT... OMG The cramps, are almost like labor pains, they put me down. I have them in my back, and stomach, and to brush my chest against something, almost puts me in tears, or even wearing a shirt hurts them. Oh to go on, The mood swings, irritability, the whole 9 yards. I always take Midol, baths, heating pads, and so on, and none seem to help. Is it because of my thyroid? Or my thyroid med's? I have stressed this to my thyroid doc. but he is a man, and just says, Oh, well keep me informed of any more changes, and he offered some cornie tips,LOL.And the normal one's. Please help.

Lindy, 10/19/2008 7:48:28 AM
I get very moody, almost depressed when i have my period. What could cause this?

Suzanne, 10/31/2008 4:27:10 PM
Thinking about happy things really helps with my cramps. I've noticed if I think about something I don't like or am annoyed by I can feel the pain become worse. But if I think about things I love and ideas that make me feel free and happy, I start to feel much better almost instantly. Then the cramps go away for hours. Mind over matter! (hot baths work AMAZINGLY, though, when I'm feeling down)

Emily, 11/4/2008 4:08:18 PM
Wow this really helps me alot my cramps hurts me sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad i started rubbing my stomach and relaxing eating chocolate and that made me feel better thanks kotex!.

Sarah, 12/11/2008 12:41:18 AM
Wow, i had no idea so many girls had no idea of what to look for or what helps! i used to get really bad cramps that would put me in bed for days, migraines with nausea, the works. I' had 3 kids since then, and the last was a C section, so now what cramps i do get, they're in my lower back...i still get migraines with nausea, just not as bad. I started on a fairly new type of birth control called Nuva Ring, and it really helps with hormonal cycles, and my periods are super predictable, and only last 3 or 4 days. The way it works, it doesn't go through your bloodstream, so you're not moody LOL! AND it also helps a lot with stress, which leads to less acne as well....my face has never been so clear! But yeah, birth control is a really good option, there's a LOT out there, you just have to find the one thats right for you. Sorry so long, I'm just really opinionated! ^_~

Xandria, 12/11/2008 10:01:28 AM
I have experienced bad period cramps until nearly fainting during the time of the month. Thank god those was last time. I reduced my cramps by exercising. It totally helps and continuous exercising helps in many ways. Hope this helps =)

jessica, 12/13/2008 6:08:26 AM
I have not had my period in years becasue I have been on Birth Control (Depo Provera Shot). But when I used to get it I hated it. I would get really bad cramps, sometimes I would blackout, passout and faint. But what really helped me is I would take a hot relaxing bath then put on my pj's and get a cup of hot tea with honey and then take a long nap. And I'd wake like an hour or two later and I'd feel fine. Hope this helps.

Rachel, 12/13/2008 10:34:34 AM

Riky, 2/19/2009 9:59:09 AM
Something that helped me with tenderness in the chest area was taking primrose oil capsuls just a week or two before my period. You can buy them at CVS or other drug stores. Look for ones with good GMP ratings. to ensure the quality.

She only asked her dad in a not so good way because im not usually that way. IM TIRED OF CRYING , IM TIRED OF BEING MEEN TO MY FAMILY,IM TIRED OF HAVING CRAMPS........H E L P !

Alexa, 4/20/2009 8:09:05 PM
During my period I use Pamprin Multi-symptom. It works very well.

Tess, 4/25/2009 2:44:01 PM
In my 40s and still regular as clockwork. I use Midol to alleviate the worst cramps - which are unbearable without it on Days 2 and 3, but ladies if you are soaking more than one pad per hour, it IS time to go see your doctor.

Talk with the other women in your family -- my mom had periods so severe with vomiting, headaches, and cramps that she was bedridden 2 days per month until menopause. Midol was her solution, however; medical intervention was necessary for my sister.

Tears flow more freely as women age - EMBRACE them without embarrassment. Get a girly movie, your favorite healthy snack, and a box of tissues and blubber away!! A corked bottle simply needs some release sometimes.

tori, 4/26/2009 2:29:41 PM
no med. helps my cramps at all. my periods are always late so i never do know when my period is coming cause there so late.

ann, 4/30/2009 10:24:55 AM
hi im 45 years old now and i become agressive when i get my periods about two week before.what can i do too change that .its not very pleasent.

ro, 5/1/2009 12:47:36 PM
hi, those little stick on heating pads are a life saver, and discrete. I get the whole 9 yds: total messed up digestive system, headache, cramps, shakes, chills, hot flashes, dizzy, exhaustion, moods. 2-3 days of agony and 8 days of flow. Dr put me on birth control at 18, helped a lot, but it caused a liver tumor at 25, so i can't take hormones anymore for the risk of another. Dr said the best thing was to have a baby, but I'm 30 and my fiance dumped me recently, so I don't see that as an immediate cure.

Amanda, 5/3/2009 7:42:22 AM
i find it didnt help AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

M. sophie, 5/4/2009 10:51:35 AM
i get really bad breast tenderness and soreness before and during my period.............anyone have any idea to relieve this! pls help...i tried to take advil and other pain killers but it does not seem to help! :/

thx.....pls respond! :)

Shirah, 5/5/2009 2:50:26 PM
Hey girls!
For the WORSE case senerios from PMS..cramps..weakness...sleepiness..emotional bouts...Make PERMANENT changes to make your "FRIEND" come and go a lot easier.
1.Exercise and
Change your eating habits. Eat smaller portions. Cut down on soda and snackies. Cut down eating heavy meat. Step up salad and veggies
2. **Take a EPSOM Minieral Salt baths twice a month**** ...this totally erased my cramps, back ache and leg pain, throbbing and cramping..because mineral baths go deep into the organs of body and bones and relieve pain and it bring longlasting results
3. Extra sleep. Builds energy and strength reserves 3days to a week BEFORE period. Relieves tension and levels of nervous are reduced. Vitamins with iron. Prevents anemia, and bothersome heart palpatations due to PMS
[I can drink Ginger Ale only to raise my alertness and stamina relieves dizziness]
4. Lay low on being the "life of the party". Take time & take care of for yourself--FIRST.
being still and quite as the schedule permits :)

cutie lover (answer), 5/6/2009 4:47:37 PM
i got headaches ,a little pain in my breasts ,a little backaches does this mean my period is coming?

Khloe!, 5/7/2009 1:31:51 PM
Dear cutielover,
these arent neccisarily signs of your period although...they can be! So if you have other symtoms like pubic hair, discharge and stuff....it could mean u r about 2 get your period!

its AMANDA YO! , 5/9/2009 2:00:26 PM
okay...first of all cutie lover these are pms symptoms which, yes, this means your period could be like a week or two away.

umm---> Khloe!,
these ARE signs that its comming.... getting pubic hair and discharge are the physical changes your body goes through first before your period then you start getting PMS symptoms.

IF I WERE YOU I WOULD BE MORE INFORMED BEFORE POSTING A COMMENT TO THE WORLD!

not trying to be rude or anything.

X AMANDA!! xoxoxoxo

Khloe!, 5/10/2009 4:44:47 PM
Yes...they are signs of PMS and i know that!! But they might not be a sign her period is coming so soon...lots of girls experience syptoms months before they actually get there period..not weeks although it could be weeks! Nobody knows for sure. Cutie lover didnt specify alllll the signs she was experiencing...so for all we know she could be years away from getting her period! I know quite well about the symtoms of puberty and what to expect. But thanks for listing them.Nobody can say that shes going to get her period in the next week if you dont know if she has discharge, pubic hair, breast development, and other physical changes. I hope this clears up your confusion with my post.

cutielover well khloe and amanda, 5/11/2009 5:06:01 PM
i read your comments and i do have discharge and some pubic hair so and im a 32a does this mean my period is coming

Khloe!, 5/12/2009 9:47:32 AM
Dear Cutielover,
These are all deffinitly signs that your period is on its way!!! congratulations! I would say that your period is anywhere from a month to six months away depending on how long you have had all the (i guess you would call) symptoms of puberty!

its AMANDA YO! , 5/16/2009 2:35:10 PM
thanks for clearing up the confusion! that post makes more sense now!

Hey, it seems like a lot of people have questions about light periods and pregnancy. Okay, so the only way to know for sure that you are not pregnant is if you haven't had sex since your last menstrual cycle. That being said, everybody's cycle is different. Depending on the woman, a full menstrual cycle can last from 18 days to 36 days. Really, the true test of what is "normal" for you is predictability. If your flow is light but it's always light, then that's likely just how your body is. Most serious health problems relating to a woman's reproductive system are marked by overly heavy, painful, or long periods. So, having a light cycle is really the better side of the spectrum to be on! Plus you don't have to worry about leaking through your pad as much! The course your menstrual cycle takes could change over your lifetime as well. I used to have super-heavy painful periods when I first started, but after a few years everything settled down and I have super-easy, average-flow, short ones now. AWESOME. The tip about cutting back on caffeine really works, too. Those over-the-counter presciptions like Midol sometimes have a hefty dose of caffeine (just read the back of the box) and they will BITE you in the BUTT (or uterus, to be specific). If you need something for pain, I would suggest a non-period-specific product, like ibuprofin, naproxin sodium, or aspirin. Of the three, I prefer naproxin!

penny, 6/7/2009 12:21:28 PM

michelle, 6/8/2009 9:33:40 PM

How can you tell if you have PMS or if you are pregnant?

Chiquita, 7/1/2009 4:30:45 PM
i need help. when i went to la my stomach started to hurt. i get mad for every little reason and lock myself in my room. is my period coming. someone plz help me.

chelsea, 7/5/2009 10:53:06 AM
chiquita,
well, it wouldent be your period if it was your stomach that started hurting. although, if lower down started huring, that would make sense, maybe some pains across the bottom of your back.

Emiily13, 7/11/2009 9:15:16 PM
ugh! i have had 3 periods in 6 months. i never know when i am going to get it. ok so anyways lately i have started to have like greenish kinda discharge. idk how to describe it, so i put a pad on thinking i was going to get my period. i took a shower, noticed nothing came out on the pad the whole day. so i put on my white skort with no pad on and blood came out!! and went through my skort. thank god i didn't go out in public yet and i caught it. so i put on a pad changed my shorts and the whole day no blood came out. i was like omg IT ONLY HAPPENED WHEN I PUT ON A WHITE SkIRT. it made me so angery. ok so is there something wrong with me? with the discharge and stuff??? helpp!

sorry if it's kinda of long. hope u understood it. kind of confusing

natalie, 7/14/2009 9:41:25 PM
hey emily13!

ok so, obviously you have an irregular period. That being said you never know when yr gonna get it and you always need to be prepaired. when you first see discharge, you should put in a tampon or pad. hope i helped!! this is what i do:)

Julie, 7/19/2009 5:57:21 AM
I think I have that Pmdd thing because my PMS is so bad I I freak out every month.I also get really bad insomnia! So far the only thing that helps at all is xanax from my dr.

Alison, 7/23/2009 10:43:28 AM
hey I really get bad cramps, headaches, lower backaches, bloating and water weight gain. I find helpful is that I use as mentioned earlier that I use Thermal Care heat wraps and prop up my legs so the blood flow doesn't seem so bad.

leescha, 7/24/2009 2:57:39 AM

My breasts always hurt when im on my period. Is there a way to cure that

Unknown, 7/30/2009 3:47:35 PM
What if you get the cramps at school? What do you do? It happened to me and every body started laughing. Any help?

Des'arae, 8/5/2009 1:44:45 AM
When I cramp I usually take either Excedrin,Midol,or Tylenol for my pain it takes a minute for it to stop.Thats the only thing I don't like about being on my period is the cramping.

Vannak, 8/11/2009 7:29:31 PM
So, my started to hurt 2 days ago, and i get annoyed easily and get mood swings. (i think) could these be signs of another period coming up?

Thanks!

happy:), 8/12/2009 11:26:05 AM
those signs are probabley your period! Have you gotton it before?

Vannak, 8/13/2009 8:39:45 AM
Ok so, i have been really moody lately, and everything people say are effecting me. Mood swings and things like that. At one sentence i could feel like im floating on clouds, and another sentence i feel like killing myself.

I played Monopoly today and I lost BIG time.

I cried my eyes out and i dont know why! Usually that wouldnt effect me!

Is that a sign of PMS?

p.s. i have had pains off and on below my navel. (Cramping?) and my breasts feel more hurty than usual.

Vannak, 8/13/2009 5:21:06 PM
Yes. Once before, 3 months ago.

But, i have had these symptoms before a few times (just the hurty breasts) and nothing has happened. It is soooo frustrating to try and track a new period!

Nickie, 8/13/2009 5:54:16 PM
This is great advice. Unfortunately, it doesn't help me at all?

Vannak, 8/14/2009 8:52:48 PM
yes i have

Vannak, 8/14/2009 9:17:21 PM
OK, all the hurting stopped, and nothing happened! SOOOOOOOO annoying!

Vannak, 8/15/2009 7:38:57 AM
Yes, i have. but had no signs leading up to it. :)

mia mia mia 10-23-08, 8/15/2009 12:35:40 PM

rebecca. , 8/20/2009 7:58:36 AM

Trist, 8/20/2009 12:18:23 PM
It really helps a lot! Before when i was at Philippines I only had cramps ones but once I went abroad and started eating yoghurt mostly every months I have cramps and what I do is I will drink aspirin or ibuprofen 30 minutes before the cramps will start and I will get better then. But I didnt know that yoghurt can cause cramps too cuz im not eating low fat yoghurt now I have to be careful for my diets. And thanks to my period it only takes 3-days :-)

Marie, 8/21/2009 5:03:44 PM
I'm 17 and I can say I PMS pretty bad. I'm fine mood-wise, but for a few days up until I get my period, I get headaches, backaches, my boobs are sometimes sore plus I get super tired. Right now, I'm due for my period in about 3 days and I've been experiencing nausea.
& when I get my period, I get the WORST leg pain for the first 3 days of my period. They bother me so that I have trouble sleeping and throughout I day, I feel tinglyness and like my circulation is being cut off. I do not get cramps so I can't complain that way.

I wish my period would just come already so I can feel a bit better! LOL.

Katherine, 8/22/2009 2:00:06 AM
Wow Marie, that sounds painful! I hate periods! I turn 15 in Jauary and first got them when I was 9! It's a natural thing but extremely annoying!

Alli, 8/22/2009 10:20:41 PM
Is it possible not to have pms? or at least not bad? because i've had 4 perods so far and i get moody, sometomes but i know i am so i just take a deep breath and grind my teeth to let my tension out and then im fine. cramps i get they last FOREVER but are VERY subtle i just take a midol teen formula and then im good for like 10 hrs even though they only work 4 six

independant thinker, 9/1/2009 8:19:07 AM
hey guys, is it normal for your cramps to make you feel like you have to number two?

Stephanie, 9/14/2009 9:02:29 AM
Nothing helps me when i have my cramps. =[

Rebekah, 10/4/2009 1:18:06 AM
Um Emily,
If you have a greenish discharge, you may want to talk to your mom and doctor because that can mean you have a serious vaginal infection or worse! I have never had it but I was reading up on it because I want to be prepared and now these things when I see and hear about then so Im not going"Hunh??" LOL(If you know what I mean!
Hope I Helped

Becca, 10/5/2009 7:53:21 PM
Omg like the onlly thing that helps me with cramps is ibprophen and alot of times i dont get to take it before i go to school and like when i cramp i can soak trew a super plus in like 1 hr and we olny get one time during the day to our lockers and i do not carry a poket book cuz like every body will know if i carr one plus i keep my stuff in my locker and we cant go to lockers and bathroom.

Leena, 10/10/2009 5:19:33 PM
I have PMDDand I will be starting birth control in a few days. Does anyone know how much spotting occurs with the pill.

Ma4532, 10/17/2009 12:58:40 PM

marissa, 10/17/2009 2:26:38 PM
Thank you this help.

Amy, 10/18/2009 5:09:21 PM
Becca, almost every girl carries a purse! Why would anyone notice you inparticular? Don't be ashamed of your period. Carry one in your pocket or just carry a purse!!!! It's no biggie. I carried a purse 2 years before I got mine, and I bring it to the bathroom all the time even if I don't have it! I really hope I helped.

Jessica, 10/19/2009 12:22:44 PM
Thank you so much! This is great. And the funny thing is my grandpa said to use a heating pad! That's what he says for most things that hurt and it's wonderful! Thank you again.
-Jess

Jessica, 10/19/2009 12:25:10 PM
Shelley and Hedie...it is normal to miss your period. It just means you're either not regulated completly, or your body is just going through changes. Don't be worried, it'll all be okay! I had the same problem believe me! (= hope this helps!!!!

Shai, 10/23/2009 10:28:35 AM
