hey =] i say some of you talked about tampons, well i have to say THEY are GREAT! and if you are scared to ask your mom leave her some kind of hint on her grocery list or something, i did not have a hard time AT ALL asking my mom for things for my periods just stay calm, that really help during periods and don't worry. what i find the best is i wear a pad and a tampon together so if my tampon leaks i have a backup at school.

I was staying over at my cousins and i didn't know how to tell anyone but my cousin and i have a very strong bond so i went ahead and told her she was really cool about it and she just smiled and told me how to handle everything and set me up with alot of pads and even told my stepmom for me because i was worried about how to tell her if your worried don't be no one will be mad at you if anything they will be excited for you tho you may not be as excited just think of how to say it and just say it!

vards comment is completely untrue you don't die if you leave a tapon in too long that is not true at all if that was true do you think anyone would want to use them you are just supposed to change it every like eight hours but honestly i sleep in one sometimes and they are in for like 12 hours and i haven't gotten sick or died have I? that is completely untrue tampons are great for sports and stuff i do belly dancing and i wear one during practice that way no one can see my pad ! good luck!

I was 13 when I started. My parents were divorced and I lived with my Dad. It was akward at first to talk to him, but I think he was more scared than me!. He offered to take me shopping, but I did not want to embarrass him. One tip I have, If you are at that age were you may be starting soon, keep a pad with you. It doesn't hurt to wear one for a day to try to get used to it. If you want to try tampons, buy a sample box in the trial section of wal-mart or your local store. They have good instruction in the box. It also includes pictures too. You won't mess it up. Trust me. It also answers lots of questions you may have about tampons. They are great to use, especially for swimming while you are on your period.

Okay girls, for those of you who haven't started yet, don't worry, it will come. When it does come, you will probably wish it would go away. Yes, it can be brown, & that's normal. Tampons CAN be dangerous if left in for too long, or if your flow isn't heavy enough to keep it moist. That's rare, but possible. Look at the warning that comes in the package. It's called, "Toxic Shock Syndrome". It surprises me that so many of you are afraid to ask your moms. Trust me, just ask her! She's been there, done that, & she will be excited that her little girl is becoming a woman. Don't be afraid to ask the proper way to use a tampon either. I did it wrong the first few times & it was very uncomfortable. Once my mom explained it, it was much easier. Now I am old, so I know all about this stuff. Anyone who is still scared to talk to your mom or dad or a friend, maybe you could go to your local Planned Parenthood. It's free, discreet, & they will tell you everything you need to know. There is nothing to be afraid of when talking to your mom about it. She's had her period for the first time before, so she knows what you are going through! Brown stuff could mean that you are on your period. If you decide to use tampons, you can't wear them for a long time. Try not to wear them longer than 6 hours(read the paper that comes with the tampons). You can get a really bad infection from wearing tampons too long (toxic shock syndrome) and if it's not taken care of, you can die. If you don't have a mom or don't want to ask her, don't be afraid to ask a teacher or an aunt, cousin, or any adult female you trust. We've all been in your shoes!

Don't worry about your period right now and it'll come. I used to actually check my underwear to see if I started my perod a lot. I wanted i so bad, but now that I have it, its not something to jump around about. You get cramps. It will come when you least expect it. Chrissy, if you have the white stuff, your period is on the way. I have yet to start mine but have read up on every google article on periods. Just take the time to search the web and books. It will help you to stay healthy and control your period. Brown discharge means your period is closer. White discharge will take a little more time til you start. But anything means its on its way! Hannah just simply ask ur mom for a tampon... Tampons are simply everywhere( drugstores, public bathrooms, and ur mom might have one) But i am only 13 i have olnly used pads and just got my period four days ago... I do know that a period can last from 2-8 days I read it in a book! Books can be helpful so go to the library yand hit the books. I also read that its ok to have two periods a month cuz it takes a yyear or two to get a regular cycle

i was over swimming at my friends house and i went to the bathroom..........and...ah,.........wiped and there was blood on the tissue but then it wasn't the seceond time! i went back in the pool-hesitently- and there was no blood in the pool and when i checked for blood again there was none!!!!!! Phoebe, your period flow might be different every month might be light and then it might be extra heavy. That is how my period has been since I started when i was 12 and now i am soon to be 25. My doctor said that your body chemistry changes that will affect the flow. Don' t worry

Hey girls. I am a high school health teacher and I want to tell y'all that most of what I hear on this chat is normal.

You don't have to be scared of tampons. I was and didn't use them until I was 16; I missed out on a lot of swim parties and fun times vacationing with my family. Remember, you should NEVER wear a tampon for more than 6 hours. I had early signs of Toxic Shock Syndrome in my early 20's and was nearly admitted to the hospital...no fun!

Pads are great as well; they're not as easy to hide in your pocket (although I LOVE that the ultra thin maxi's are being made...I wish I would have had those when I was younger!), but they are safer than tamopns. I use a combination of both, since the beginning of my periods are heavy, then they get lighter as they go.

If you are really concerned that something is wrong with you, talk to your mom or a teacher or a friends' mom; but better yet, talk to your doctor. Your doctor or a school nurse can help waaaaaayyy more than someone who doesn't work in the medical field!

When my two girls start their periods I will certainly point them to this website; great discussions! Thanks, ladies, for being so open and honest on a subject that isn't easy to talk about!

Hello all!

I got my period when I was 14 and it wasn't that big of a deal! I started off with pads and then switched to tampons and tampons make life SO much easier :-) But if you are afraid to use a tampon, then sticking with pads is totally okay, too. This sounds cheesy, but don't EVER feel embarrassed about telling your mom; she will support you, no matter what...I mean it happens to EVERY female on the planet! And after the first couple of times, you know when your period is coming; cramps, strange mood swings, and weird food cravings! (you might notice that you break out on your face a little bit too) And remember, the first five or so years, your period can be irregular, so don't stress on the exact timing! If you have any girly questions about ANYTHING, let me know! (I'm 21, so I know just about everything about your period :-) )

Katlin: I got my period a little more than a month ago and I didn't even notice it was there until I went to the bathroom and found fresh blood in my undies. I had been waiting for it to come since I was about a year late. I'm 13 years old and I didn't get cramps, bloating, fatigue (I sound like a doctor LOL) but ya know. Talk to your mom about it. I know, I know, it may be awkward but it's a sooner or later thing. Not even my doctor could believe how late i was. And even though it was only a year's difference, he was talking to my parents about the cervical cancer shot which I couldn't get at the time because I was "period-less". But just do what everyone tells you to do. And if ya didn't hear it yet, here it is:
- Bring a couple of pads or tampons in a pocket or purse
-Try not to worry about it because that delays it
-When it starts to get regular in terms of intervals, print out a blank calendar and calculate when you may get it depending on your cycle.
- Stay calm and try to protect your emotions and thoughts (you may get really moody)
-For cramps, carry a pain killer (Advil, Motrin, Tylenol, etc.) or if it's really bad something specially made for periods (Midol, Pamprin, etc)
-For a nasty PMS day, take something like Estroven

i think i got my period, but im not sure. there was no blood in my urin but the was a little blood in my undies and when i whipped there was a brownish red sectretion on the tolit paper but i put a pad in to be on the safe side:D

Kalyn, sounds to me like you got your period. There will be some clumpy looking stuff. That's your vaj wall. Ya know where all the blood comes from. But since it actually tissue coming out, that's what it is. It just didn't dissolve into liquidy blood.

Cearra, I think you are coming onto your period. The best thing to do is wear pantyliners, not pads, pantyliners. Their smaller and thinner so you don't have to worry about big bulky pads sticking out your pants. Get some of those and pads, but hold the pads for when you actually get your period.

i got my period when i was 13 and my dad was overseas and it lasted for a day. when my dad came back about a week later i just said to him"dad, i got my first period" and he said ok ill go buy you some pads and tampons later today". it was a little awkward but im glad i told him. i left the periodless club on 4/23/07.

it is normal to skip months in the first couple of years, Ive had it for two years and it just became regular about two months ago. if there is no way that you can be pregnant, then you arent. dont worry about it, your period will probably come sometime next month. If it doesnt and your still worried talk to your mom or someone else like a good friend.

To all of you who are freaked out about getting your period, dont be. It's normal and happens to every girl. It helps to be prepared, and part of that is learning what to expect, you may also want to keep thing like pads in your locker or a purse. You can make yourself a "survival pack" and in a cute, stylish bag, keep pads, liners, tampons and midol(or ibuprofen). You may even want to make more then one of these so that you haved one wherever you are. If you keep it all in a bag then no one has to know whats in it.

dont be scared about starting your period, it makes your first time much easier if you dont have a panic attack because you are so terrified. if you don't want to talk to your mom then talk to a sister, friend, teacher, cousin, aunt,etc. you need to tell someone who you get your period for the first time.

For those of you who are 13 and older and haven't started your periods, that's a good thing. I felt embarrassed when my friends all got periods, but when I finally got them, I HATED them. And I still do. If you do sports, use tampons. I'm a cheerleader.

hey girls. Okay here's the scoop, since I read a TON of your comments and they all seemed to be similar.

If you have brown discharge in your underwear, YES this IS your period! You may have several periods like this before it actually becomes the normal red color, BUT even after you begin having regular periods, it is very normal for you to have brown colored blood/discharge from time to time...usually on your last day if menstruation during each cycle.

Any girls who are very anxious to get your first period..RELAX!!! You'll have plenty of periods and when you start having them you'll wonder why you ever wished for it in the first place.

If you're wondering wether or not to use tampons I have several suggestions. You should use tampons only after thoroughly reading the instruction sheet that comes in EVERY box of tampons. You need to start with the smallest absorbency or just a 'regular' absorbency tampon until you find out what absorbency you need. If after reading the instructions, you still aren't comfortable, ask a girlfriend!!!! Your girlfriends are the best people to ask and over the years you'll learn that they will be your best 'period allies'.
Now, if you're wanting something more secure than a pad, but you're not ready for a tampon, try this little trick I made up when I started my period. Take two or three squares of toilet paper, fold them in half long ways and roll them up into a chapstick sized tube and place the paper between the lips of your vagina. It'll stay put and collect any blood that threatens to overflow your pad OR tampon. Plus if you're in the bathroom with no extra pad or tampon you can use this method to give you time to find one!!

Your tampon should not hurt. If it does you've got it in wrong. Try re-reading the instructions in the tampon box. Make sure you tilt the tampon up towards your back when you're putting it in. Try using a lower absorbency tampon if you're still having trouble. Also make sure you're putting it in as far as you can before you push the tubes together to insert the actual tampon. Use both hands. That will help.
You'll know it's in correctly if you feel no discomfort.

NO! You don't have to take your tampon out to use the bathroom. I always thought u did for several years and was relieved roll find out that you can do number one And two (Eww, I know) without taking out your tampon. Although sometimes you may find it more difficult to go number two with the tampon in. Your muscles aren't able to work as effectively for that.

all these question and concerns are the ones i had back when i was new to menstruation, and there all totally normal. you dont have to worry tampons, its not a big deal- its as easy as putting on a glove. Dont be embarassed to talk to your mom, chances are she had the same problems as you did. Aswell as the fluids that you are seeing that dont look normal, thats your body preparing for menstruation.

I was 14 when I first started my period! Most of my friends started before me, but that was okay because now I'm glad I was sort of a late bloomer-- periods pretty much suck. I really wanted my period and had discharge for about a year and a half before it came, and yeah it was brown.
Tampons are great and I used one for the first time on my second period because I had swimming for school. I love them because they aren't smelly like pads D: I left one in once for 15 hours on accident! That's totally not recommended at all, but it shows that they're not going to kill you if you leave them in for an extra hour or two. I have to wear them at night because normally my flow is heavy.

Yeah, you do. Your period causes your breasts to be aore and can cause headaches. It's different for every girl and sometimes varies from period to period but, generally, that's what happens. I think it's caused by the release of certain hormones during your period. TOohelp, you can take tylenol or ask your parents about midol or pamprin; they treat most symptoms of periods. But, ask your parents first to make sure you're not allergic.

your period will come, don't worry. I think you just get the discharge when you get older and start to go through puberty. All of this stuff (discharge, hair, and breasts) all leads up to getting your period. I have been wanting my period for a long time and finally got it. This may sound like a weird thing to pray about and stuff but I actually payed to God that I would get my period. And I did, GOD answers prayers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

there's nothing to be nervous about. It's just a natural that every girl goes through. all the symptoms (breasts, hair, and discharge) are all signs that you are going to get it. just be safe and carry a pad with you in your purse or something.

Hi, I am currently in grade 9 and 14 yrs old. I had gotten my period when I was in grade six, and never got it again after that. Today, I woke up really hungry and grumpy, went to my friends house at around 6 and came home at nine, only to find blood on my underwear. I then put a pad on (that I had from the left overs from grade six), and before I went to bed, I checked and there was nothing. Is this normal, or should I be worried and tell my mom. Help is greatly appreciated. My lower stomach is sore, my legs feel heavy and for some reason, I suddenly crave cookies. Discharge can last a while but once it starts to get heavier then you are getting closer. Some girls get there periods when they weigh about 100 pounds. If u still dont get anything try telling someone about it. Like mom or stepmom or some1 that you trust. Most importantly you shuld tell your doctor.

Hey Rhi! It's different for everyone. Some people feel cramps first, some get craveings for sweet/sour/salty stuff, or just feel really sensative at times. You can tell by using when your mom or sis got theirs. Just be patient when it comes you will know. And don't be afraid to talk to ur mom about it. She can help you answer alot of ???'s

okay, so my period is over. it lasted like five days. but now i feel so relaxed and not worrying if i would leak. i'm so happy it's over. and i just started. my only problem is that i don't know when i will start again and i might just leak and get embarassed. but i carry a pad with me to school everyday. oh yeah angelixa, you'll start. my period took like forever but it started. remember there are early and late bloomers and you just might be a late bloomer.

this sounds ridiculous but i used to pray to God that i would get my period! i wanted it so bad!! i have had two and this also sounds really really awkward... but pads annoyed me so much so i put on 2 pairs of underwear and they didn't bother me one bit! :) and i get NO cramps!! woohoo! i only got them once, 2 months before my first period i stayed at my house for 4 days because they were the most awful pain i had ever had. i threw up 4 times, and i had to crawl around the house because they hurt so bad when i stretched out! i crunched up in a ball becasue they were so nasty! i thought for sure i would have gotten them! but never did until 2 months later! ever since i have never gotten another cramp!!! :) i guess it was just that one time... it really stinks if you get bad cramps! but i don't mind my period if i got double duty undies on lol =P

JILL: alright, there isnt much normal with periods in the first place, so many people are irregular (like myself). you probably dont have it because your 95 pounds, and girls usually wont get it until theyre 100 or 105. the discharge and cramps are because your body IS cycling, just not mature enough to actually drop an egg yet. still, ask your doctor about it and see what he/she says.

Tampons don't hurt when you use them right. When you buy a box of tampons, they come with directions. And the useful thing about tampons is that you can use them up to 8 hours!! But no more than that. If you wear them more than 8 hours, you are at risk to get Toxic Shock Syndrome. But it usally occurs in older women. I hope this helps.

Firstly don't panic, all of us have to tell our mums at some point, including your mum. just wait until she is alone and nobody else is around, take a deep breath and tell her. believe e it is hard but it's got to be done and it gets easier as soon as you start talking to her. the hardest bit is getting yourself to go up to her and then the rest is easy.

marisol-u cant stop ur flow it just depends upon how ur body is. and for math class just make sure u wear a thicker pad.
mikayla-everybodys body is different and yours should be coming soon and the discharge is normal. plus when u get older hair starts growing where there wasn't before and you dont have to be embarrased about it because it should be there. im sure your mother, school nurse, or any other trusted experianced girl can help support u =]

I satrted my period on the 17th of january 2009. The next month it came a little before the date it was suppose to come, but this month, march, it hasnt come yet its the 18th and nothing is this normal?

I never knew so many girls had so many different questions about their periods. Launa and Miya the only way I can tell you to prepare for your period is to have a few pads on hand every day just in case and some tylenol or midol. Ibuprofen will make your bleeding worse.

Mikaela- many ladies have what they call irregular periods meaning they come at different days of each month. Yes it is normal. Maria- yes this could mean you are having your period but to be certain you may want to talk to your mom, a school nurse or other trusted female. Cailyn- it is ok for your period to come a little later but when swimming while on your period always use a tampon the pad will not help in the water. Maggie-hms you are having what they call a heavy flow period try using a tampon and a pad and don't take ibuprofen for the cramps bc it makes you bleed more. Marisol- You may have your period a little later than normal and if you dont have it before your next one should start then you may need to see your doctor.

aww this is soo cute, it makes me remember when it was just b4 i started my period. its only been like 3 or 4 years, but still. you girls dont need to worry soo much about wanting to get your period sooner. trust me, you will get it soon enough and once you do have it, you'll wish you never did. its such a pain,, that can be taken literally too!!! so, dont worry about when you'll get it and when you do, do NOT be afraid to talk to your mom or another trusted female. youll be surprised at how kind and understanding she'll be torward your situation. good luck!!! =)

dear frustrated,
I dont have my period yet either. This is how im preparing for it (hope it helps). I carry a pad around with me in my backpack just in case i get it at school along with extra undies. At home i have a mini pack of pads. For me, it also helps talking with my friends because i know that there going through the same thing. Some of my friends have it (so they can tell me what to expect) and some dont (we can talk about when we think were going to get it). I know its kinda awkward talking to your mom but if your friend is there with u...trust me its alot less awkward. Also reading articles like this one can be helpful (also the comments because you can get support)!! Hope this helps! GOOD LUCK!! and wish me some 2 :)

dont worry, im also 14 and dindnt get my period until like 3 months ago. make sure you have pms symptoms and cramps and body changing physically, if you have then this means its on its way. if the doctor said it will come soon, then trust her! also check to see when your mom and aunts got their period as heredity plays an important part. dont be nervous the more you are prepared and the more information you know about your period the less nervous you will be! getting your period is no big deal...life goes on!

you need pubic hair before you get your period soooo i would say your about 6months to a year and a half away from getting your period. The light yellow brown discharge depending on the shade is a sign of puberty!! if i gets darker this is a sign you are very close to your period.

yes it is very possible to get your period with a 32a bra!! as long as you have the other symtoms of puberty! If you answered yes to the last question then congratulaitions...u got your period!!

your period is probablly still irregular...so i wouldnt be worried. But if you are talk 2 your mom, sibling, or another trusted adult about it. If one of them thinks its something to worry about ask them to take you to the doctor!! they always know best.

It is perfectly normal not to start your period until you are sixteen...even older then 16! But if you are near 18 or if u have concerns about it you should go to the doctor and talk to them about it. But for now be glad u havent started and enjoy it :)!

I started my period a year ago it has been comeing nomaly for the past year it is usally comes today or before today (2 to 3 day before) but it hasent came yet!!! When you get your period, I know its easier said then done...but you will just have to take a deep breath, walk up to your dad and say, hey dad i just got my period. Then just ask him to get you some pads. I know this sounds really difficult to do but think about it...you have 2 tell him sometime right!?! You cant live off of toilet paper until you move out :)! So this is what i would do and if he tries to talk to you about it just simply say ... its taken care of and walk away!! Its awkward for everyone but we get thorugh it. Everyone has awkard and embarrasing period stories sooo dont feel like your alone or anything like that! I hope this helps! Just stay calm and breathe when it happens soon that first awkwrd time will be over and you can just forget about it! :)

Dear Sharon, firstly calm down! it might be that u being ill has postponed ur period, it can do that! getting stressed or ill changes ur body and so ur period sometimes doesn't come on time. if u've never had sexual intercourse then there's no way that u could be pregnant! i think the docter may tell u just what i hav, ok.

Please girls, just talk to your moms! When I got my period (at 14, kind of late) I talked to my best friend's mom because my mom and I weren't close. She was so great and it helped to talk to an adult. I strted using my mom's tampons beacuse I didn't think the pads were comfortable. She finally noticed that she was running out quicker than usual, and asked me about it. She was really hurt that I didn't come to her...

All women are different..some have heavy flows and cramp, some have light flows but get cramps, some have heavy flows but dont get cramps, and some have light flows w/o cramps! Soo to answer your question...yes it is normal to cramp and bleed heavy. Depending on your situation..im not sure of the specificts of the pain of the cramps or the amount of blood..you could go c a doctor if you are still worried to get some emdicine to releave your cramps and lighten your flow!! But deffinitly you need to change your pad/tampon regurally!

Im the same way! I think lots of girls can relate to that! There is deffinitly nothing wrong with being 14 and not having your period. But if you get to 17 and you dont have it you may want to go c ur doctor! But for now i wouldnt worry about it :)! When you get it..dont be embarrased to talk to your mom about it because she had to go throught he exact same thing! Just take a deep breath and say mom..i just got my period. All you have to do is get through the first few periodsand after that talking about it with your mom will be like talking about what you want for dinner!

I started my period when I was 14 years old. When I went to the doctor for a physical exam a few months prior, I had small breasts (still small) and pubic hair. The doctor took one peek and said I would be starting within 6 months. She was exactly right.

I went through puberty for 4 years before I got my first period (on Christmas Eve - ick!). I started wearing a training bra in 6th grade. My period came in 10th grade.

I don't think armpit hair has much to do with your period. But I did have some "fuzzies" before I started. Shaving it made it much thicker.

Watch out for signs that you may be starting you period soon: breast tenderness or swelling, mood swings (anger or depression), bloating, general fatigue, sudden acne, etc.

Keep a "light days" pad (panty-liner) on if you think you will be starting soon. And remember to always have a couple days of "feminine supplies" just in case. Hope this helps.

Thats great that you and your best friend's mom are close enough to have her buy you pads!! Soo..back to the problem. When you think about telling your dad you get really embarrassed. But first, arent a lot of people embarrassed about talking to there parents about there period..wheather there talking to there mom or dad. So you arent the only one going through this. Maybe it would be easier to tell him if your best friend was there..so you could have some support and she could make sure u told him. I think all of us havw had embarrassing things we had to tell our parents. One girl i know hid thongs from her mom. She would do tje laundry at the end of the week so her mom wouldnt find them. But, her mom did find them! Thats embarrassing! But they talked about it and its alll ok! Also, a girl that i went to camp with started shaving her underarms with out talking to parents about it. When she went to the doctor to get a physical, the doctor asked her how long she had been shaving!! How embarrassing!! But she talked through it with her parents and it was alll good! So think about if your dad founf out that way...say if her found one of your pads! That would be a lot more embarrassing! Just think that after you tell him all that nervousness, anticipation, scaredness and allllll of that will go away and u will feel so much better!

Ok, I have a couple questions- do you always have discharge before you get your period? cuz I don't have any discharge, but I think I'm going to start pretty soon. Also, I want to start shaving, and I sorta asked my mom about it- "Mom, how come I don't shave?" and she was like, "Well it can get time consuming, cuz u have to keep it up."

i think i have started my period because i went to the bathroom and there were brown lines in my underwear.my best friend had started her period and told me that its brown at first so i wanted to be sure so i put toilet paper in my undies.when i went back to the bathroom there were still brown lines in my underwear and when i wiped there was blood so i knew i had.then when i got home i put a pad on and told my mom.my friend wanted me to go swimming with her and her friend so since it wasnt so heavy and the water stopped it.when i got home there wasnt anything in my pad.i went to sleep with it on and there still wasnt.is this normal? help me please!!

You are ok Ashton, sometimes when in water it stops, it should start back up or if it is your first period it's normal to spot until the blood starts to flow really well, different things trigger your blood to flow more or less hope this helps

Its very normal to have a light flow on day 2 of your period. First of all you just got it sooo...its still irregular. And second, some people start there flow heavy and end light and some start light and end heavy! Hahah :) it just depends on the person!

That clearish sticky stuff in your undies is something called discharge! It is a sign of puberty! Its perfectly normal and nothing to worry about! But if it starts to smell really strong or is a green-color you should see your doctor! Hope this helped :))

hahaha..no offesnse taken!! :)! I carry pads with me (just in case) in a little walet..like a change purse! But some other people i know use like travel (bar) soap cases to carry extra undies and pads. To get them to the bathroom can be tricky...

1. if you know your on your period...wear a jacket with some pockets and put them in there.
2.wear a purse and bring it to the bathroom (guys dont notice!)
3.slip that little change purse into your pants pocket
4.go in between classes!! Just bring your backpack in with you.

Guys dont really notice any of this because they are soooo oblivious to everything!! HAHAH! But seriously, it may feel like everyone is watching you but...if the girls notice...they can realate to what you are doing and wont say anything...or if a guy sees he wont have any idea what you are doing and move on thinking about whatever those duded think about!! haha :)! I have been reading some of your comments. I dont understand why you are afraid to talk to you parents, they should be talking to you about this stuff considering your age. I didnt et mine till i was 17 and when i did it was pretty painful (the cramping) Anyway i think i used pads fpr the first month and never again. Tampoons are so easy to use, they wont kill you, as with everything else there are precautions but i am 29 now and never had a problem, they are comfortable most of the time you dont even realixze you are wearing one. I will never wear a pad again the thought of it grosses me out. Why would you want to wear a pad and feel blood coming out of you and s wet pad that can leave an oder. I suggest all young girls at least try a tampoon if you dont like it that your choice. If its hard to put in use a lubricatant like ky jelly or even petrolum jelly. Dont be scared there is no reason for it. I remember when i first started a friend told me you have to change it every time u pee. i was going through them like crazy then i read the insructions which state you do not ave to change ur tampoon everytime you go to the bathroom..... As far as this shaving thing i keep hearing about. If u r a female with hair under your arms shave it. Women usually dont have armpit air. If you want to shave other private places just shave it all off. Young girls def dont want a bush not attractive at all. sorry i sound so blunt just being honest. I cant believe parents are not educating there children anymore. Maybe they just dont care.

If you have not had your first period, freaking out over it delays it!!!

Tampons are really comfy, IF your ready for them!!

That white discharge is NOTHING to worry about! I had it for about a year before I had my first period!!

My BFF has really bad cramps and stuff, but my cramps aren't too bad!!!

I know this had nothing to do with periods and stuff, but for those of you who asked, you don't NEED to wear a bra! You don't NEED to have a push up bra! I have one, but if you don't have the "stuff" to fill it in, it's really uncomfortable!!! I used to worry that my breast are too small compared to my friends, but ten again, I'm Asian, and am at least a year younger than the rest of my friends!!!

About the more than 1 period per a month thing:

You can have that if you started your period recently! (when I say recently I mean if you had your first period a year ago!!!) Your periods aren't regular yet!! And if you didn't have it the month before, your body is just making up for what you missed!!!

I do and don't agree with u. True, not every one needs a push-up bra. But I think that if someone is developing, they definitely need some kind of a bra. I had training bra's and then i "graduated" to a "real" bra, and when i wore my training bra once, it really looked bad. Sooo, i think that if u are more "mature" then u should have one with a little padding. I got my favorite bra from Target actually, if anyone wants to know where to get one ;)

I just had my period yesterday. blaahh, oh the joy! :p and I was wondering do they sell pads that fit my size im 13 weigh 90 pounds. do they sell diffrent sizes cause im using my moms pads and there very bulky, but it works great at night. So is there?

girls: Don't be afraid to ask your mom, and if your afraid she'll tell someone, tell her very seriously that you don't want her to tell anyone because there is no reason they should no, it's your buisness. Also I will answer some questions.

1. Never wear a tampon at night. you can get a rare disese if you leave it to long. max: 4 hours. Wear a pad instead, with wings because you can leak.

2. your period usually last 4- 7 days. the usuall but everyones diffrent. Your first period may be light (usually). It's ok when you get your period that you skip a couple of months after the next one but it happens in the first.

3. When you pee, the blood may not be gushing down. so don't worry if you expect that.

4: How does the blood look? It is brown , rusty red, or bright red. It is not going to be much blood like ooze allover.

5. Keep a good higene, because an odor will develop, that you may not smell but other people may. Take Showers, wash down there very good. When you pee take the opertunity to whip the blood. And change pads if it's almost full of blood.

Well I gave you some tips there... and I hope you can answer my question just like i did to yours. (I hope)

Being hungry a lot is a sign that you are growing...which comes along with puberty! Small cramps are also a sign of your period although it could also be confused with hunger pains, dehydrations, and need for potacium. But if your loaded up on those things...its a PMS symptom! About being prepared and stuff, you may to talk to some of your friends about there periods and advice about how they talk to their moms about it and stuff before you take some from her closet. Moms can be scary to talk to because you are afraid of there reaction and you dont know how to start the conversation. For now you dont have 2 steal anything...athough you will know where to get pads when you get your period.

yes, all this is normal. Everyone develops at there own rate so where you are in puberty might not neccisarily be where your friends are or even your (even you have them) older sisters.

if i where you, i would give tampons a try if you want to go swimming!
pads are NOT recommended for swimming trips.
even if your almost positive you wont get your period in the lake, i would bring some extra tampons, just in case!

Tampons are a great allternitive to pads becasue they make you feel like your not even on your period! Tampons dont hurt if they are inserted the right way. When you put them in tilt them at a slight angle towards your back. Then make sure it is up far enough. Then "ta da" your wearing a tampon. It might take a few tries to get the hang of it but once ya know, ya know! hahaha. But remember you should only keep you tampon in less then 8 hours depending on how light or heavy your flow is. If you keep it in longer you could get TTS or toxic shock syndrome.

make sure it is the vagina u r inserting it in,not the hyphen.
if it helps,do it wen ur flow is the heaviest that way you can know if it is inserted the right way.it is important to get the smallest kind they have.i recomend kotex.they r pretty good.and if it helps,i remember my first time.and you know how i practiced?i used a Q-tip.

what is happenning to you is completely normal! many of the first couple periods will probably be erregular, it usually takes 1-2 years before the cycle is every month! dont worry :).

Im 14 and i've never had my period before. My breasts have been developing for about 2/3 years now and i've had a white discharge for about 2 years. I shave my legs, wear deoderant, im growin a bit, when will i ever get my period?

Becky- ur period will come when ur body is ready. Talk to ur mom about when she got her period or any other woman relatives. And u can always talk to ur doctor, but dont worry u will get your period when the time comes.

it sounds like your period is rly close! it is normal to have discharge for about 2 years before your first period.and about 2 and a half years after your breasts start developing, you usually get your period!
but i dont see why you would want to hurry it up. you should enjoy the time you have as a "kid" before you have your period! after you have your period, you might think "i wonder why i ever wanted it in the first place" (i havent had mine but some of my friends have and they hate it). and you wont ever stop having it untill you are about 50+ years old!
please, dont rush your period! enjoy the time you have without it bugging you every month!

Well it sounds like you are going to get your period soon! Periods usually come about 2 years after your breats start to develop and 6 months to 1 year 1/2 after discharge starts. Everyone develops at there own rate. The normal range to start is 9-15 but some people get theirs anywhere from the age of 8- 17! So dont worry just because all your friends have it doesnt make you any different then them...you are just develeping later!

OH MAN there is ALOT to know and ALOT of advice, but ill tell you a few things that ive learned...
when you get your period, dont freak!if its at school, make a tiolet paper pad or go to the nurse., when you get home, just tell your mom you had your period and she'll give you some pads or tampons, but i recommend pads for the first few periods.
if your mom makes you wear tampons, ask her to show you how to put it in right, so it doesent hurt. and if she gives you pads, they are pretty simple to put on (just stick them in your underwear)

if you get your period at school, and it leaks through.... or you get it anywhere else, i usually carry a sweater with me, because i feel the day is coming soon, and what i would do with the sweater is tie it around my waist, so noone can see.

the last thing is, dont be scared or worry about your period! that delays it.

Hi Gianna!

I was about your size when I was your age. I am now twenty.

It doesn't matter the size of your body/how tall you are... it will not determine when you have your period.

Girls can have their periods anywhere from age 9 to 17. Be patient.

I know it feels like a waiting game. I was 13 when I had my first period and as soon as I had it, I didn't want it anymore. Remember girls, once you have your period, its there until you're in your 40s/50s so be patient. It will come when its ready. There is nothing wrong with you if it doesn't come right away.

when you have your period, crapms are usually not down in the stomach rehion, but down lower. if you think you might've thought they where near your stomach but they werrent, here are signs your period is coming close:

1.discharge for about 6 months to 2 years.
2.breast development for about 8 months to 2 years
3.pubic hair
4.growth spurts
5.your starting to smell
6.cramps (that feel uncomfterble, not painfull)
7.change in body shape

if you have all or most of those signs i would be expecting you will have your period withing the next 1-6months.

The cramps, dischanrge, and headache are all symptoms of getting your period. Although some people experience these things for months before they actually get there period. It depends on if you also have things like pubic hair and breast development. SO depending on if you have those things it could be your period that is coming.

pads and tampons are both offer great protection! If you are active in sports or have had your period for a while and are comfortable with your body tampons are the way to go! They make you feel like your not even on your period!
Pads are good for everyone and especially to sleep in! When you first get your period i would suggest pads until you are more comfortable with it. But if you already are comfortable..whatever use tampons it doeesnt really matter!

ok what you need to do is next time you go to the doctor or something,privately tell him or her about it your foster mom will have to listen to the doctor.and dont worry,being on this website is nothing to be ashamed of!!!and you dont have to tell ur mom about it.and you dont have to tell her everything about what you do,some things,a girl just has to keep to herself! :) if you cant tell your doctor,than just take a deep breath,walk into the room where ur mom is,and tell her you need to talk about something VERY important,and it needs to be private.than just tell her,"mom,i think ive just gotten my period,do you have something i can use?"trust me,she will remember her first period and will be happy to help.she will understand!sometimes,you have to be brave and step out of your shell!no matter how hard it is,it will always be worth it.

there are two way that can make you feel comftorble with telling your mom that you got your period.

#1 is: get her alone, without your dad or any siblings and tell her that you got it.

#2 is: go to your mom when shes nice and buisy and tell her. make sure shes very buisy, or she'll make a bigger deal over it..... (probably).

It is very normal for your period to be irregular at first. This ireggularity can last up to 1-1 1/2! Then your period should become predictable :).

ive heard many negative and positive things about pads AND tampons. they say tampons are way better because you dont feel the blood coming out, and you can do anything you can do when your not on your period, but they can give you tts if you leave them in too long. an they say pads are good because they dont give you diseases and they are bad because its easy for them to leak. if you think your mature enough to try tampons, tell your mom that! prove it to her! :)

that sound perfectly normal to me! if you have grown in the past few months, it will get your period mixed up. but also, its normal for periods to be erregular for the first year or so! (my friend said her mom got it, then diddent have it for another two years!, whitch i dont think is true) but not having it for about seven months would be a problem, maybe eight.

The same thing would happen to me! If your leaking through your pads just put on two but if its that heavy then go to a doctor. if your pad is folding down (like what happened to me) you should try extra long pads or put on a less absorbant pad then your reg. one behind or infront of your pad. It sounds cazy and confusing i know, but try it! I really hope i helped you!

to people that are freaking out that their periods are gong to be irregular for the first 1-2 years.

Ive had my period 3 times, and they have all been around the same week in the month. mine is already regular. so there is a chance that ur period won't be irregular, like mine. But if ur period is errregular just carry tampons or pads with you when you are out of the house. that way, if your in a store and you go to the bathroom, you wont be cought off gaurd.

yes you use the applicater to puch it up there. Then you push the other thing so it releases the tampon. it feels weird pushing the applicater... up there. (i just recently put in my first tampon) but it helps if you have a mirror under you. I agree its an embarrassing question!! But we all feel 'weird' on this subject!

hygeine is an extremly important thing espically during your period. Iv'e had my period about a couple months now but I have'nt bleed in the shower before. But just in case you are different use a towel to dry everywhere but down there, bring a papertowel just to dry there. I hope i helped and good luck!
btw showers during your period make you feel sooo much cleaner

periods suck i know.But we all get thru it,but its hard and sometimes depressing in this time of life,so this is a hard time in puberty! witch is why we all need to stay with eachother and treat eachother equally. :)

Okay i just turned 16 last month....i've been having having my period since i was 13 but it's always been irregular....STILL! umm my last period was in February and then today i got it. I am still a virigin and i don't take Birth Control pills.....is this normal?

calm down!its really good to know that your period is coming soon so that you can prepare for it so you wont freak out and not know what to do. i would suggest packing an emegency pad in your school bag or pocket.

i really think im gonna get it soon...ive been having like little stomach cramps below my belly button. and...my chin broke out! which never happened before :((. Today i seriosly thought i got it becasue i felt a sudden drop of fluid and lots of stuff came out..and was coming out all day! But that drop was like a lot! But then...i didnt! And a couple days ago i got a slight preasure in my vajayjay...sorta hurt...but didnt last long! and my friends said that...its a sign of your period! Plus..my boobs r having like a growthspurt! hahaha. I dont necessarily want it...but i want to know when i will get it! Plus...like a bunch of my good friends have theres...and i want to be part of that "knowing" group!

To: yogilover5, do you know if you have pads and tampons in your house? if you do put some in your backpack, just incase. if you dont have "supplies" ready in time if you start, ask your friends if they have any, or your mom. you should never be embaressed, trust me I've started mine and ive asked a teacher before just ask, you'll be ok!! Periods are not as bad as they say. If you dont feel like yourself and your moods change like seasons, you my be on your pms week. Just remember to change your pad every 4 hours, or else there is some bad oder,take daily vitamins, they help you!! And showr daily, also. If you dont know how to put in a tampon, and you've tried before, ask a trusted female, like your friends or your mom. ask me again if you need more questions. So, uh, it's gross, but I'm 18 and I've been having my period for about four years now and I get these yucky gooey like, I don't know, chunks, I guess you could call them. Uh, what are those and are they normal? I've been checking on my family history a lot to see about heriditary diseases and whatnot and my mom has this thing ( I don't know what it's called) where her uterus is literally falling out of her vagina and I'm a little worried this could be related. Noo discharge is not the same thing as your period. Discharge is the vagina's way of cleaning itself. But...discharge is a sign that you are healthy and your period is on its way!

i was in the hospital and one of my ovaries are flipped over

i had ultra sounds and cats scans and they can't find out why my appendix hurts so terribly. on top of that i got my perod today when i walked in school - i was wearing whitepants and they don't look good with reed stains. I'm in so mmuch pain - im 14 and i just would like info on how long it last/ i also had a deeeep purple in my blood like a jelly almost ---- is this normal - thank you for your time =]

depends what kind of purple, its usually drakish brown and red, but i guess some people could mistake it for purple. if it starts to look really purple i would go see my doctor.

yeah thats probably ur period. you usually get cramps below your belly button then your first period come a few days later! (usually) its usually brownish red, so yeah i think thats it.
